Exhibition: Salon de l'Union des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs de 1896 (N°627)
Camille Métra, eldest daughter of the chemist Louis Métra and Rosalie Merny, was born on November 28, 1864 in Paris. We know nothing to this day of her artistic training, however she was recognized in Parisian circles for her qualities as a figure painter and pastellist. Camille married for the first time on January 18, 1887 in Paris with Adolphe Fernand Blayn, painter and had a child from this union named Prosper Daniel who will be a chemist like his grandfather. The bride and groom had as witnesses the painters Luc Olivier Merson (1846-1920) and Henry Lerolle (1848-1929) as well as the deputy Julien Antoine Simyan (1850-1926). Camille became a widow in 1892. Our artist is known in 1895 with two works sent to the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts of the same year under her maiden name Métra. Camille remarried on August 14, 1895 in Paris with Gustave Hubbard (Madrid, 1858 – Paris, 1927), lawyer and deputy of Seine et Oise and undersecretary of state for war in 1881 from whom she divorced on December 21, 1904 without children. Member of the Union of Women Painters, she exhibited regularly at the Georges Petit gallery from 1891 to 1911 where she was noticed several times. Camille died on November 13, 1936 in Paris at the age of 71.
Our painting dated 1896 and signed at the time with his compound name Métra-Hubbard, refers to a poem published in 1782 by Goethe and which he would take up extensively in his Faust (part 1, lines 2759-82). This poem would be brought back into fashion in the middle of the romantic 19th century by various translations, the best known of which are by Gérard de Nerval (1827) and later by Louise Ackermann (1863). Frantz Schubert in 1816, Hector Berlioz in 1845 and Charles Gounod in 1859 would set this poem to music in their respective operas.

Exhibition: French Watercolour Society, 11th exhibition, Galerie Georges Petit, 8, rue de Sèze, Paris. Catalogue number: 125
This classic drawing but tinted with symbolism is an excellent example of the talents of illustrator of Albert Maignan, a facet of his art that he developed significantly from 1883.
It is one of five watercolours in “black ivory” created by Maignan to illustrate the Polyeucte from Cornelius, a book specially published by Mame Editions (for which Maignan worked a lot) for the Universal Exhibition of 1889. These watercolours were exhibited in 1889 at the famous Galerie Georges Petit (which hosted the 11th exhibition of the French Water Color Society) under No. 124/125/126/127/128 (Maignan exposed another illustrative drawing for “Boileau” under No. 129).
Each drawing illustrating an episode of all five acts of the tragedy.
Our work represents the moment when Pauline (daughter of Felix, Roman senator and governor of the province of Armenia) regains his former suitor Severus (a noble Roman general) and explains that she is now married to Polyeucte (a lord of Armenia) and she can see him again. The scene is set in a garden with a small temple of Vesta, where Pauline has filed an offering; the Pauline confidante named Stratonice, stands at his side, while Severus was accompanied by his servant Fabian. The drawing is captioned by Pauline words to Severus: “Yes I love Severus, and not doing as an excuse”
The book was printed in 800 copies, containing compositions from Maignan etched by Emile Boivin...

The Knight's Farewell
Oil on canvas
124 x 64 cm
Not signed
A very beautiful painting, romantic and very decorative, both monumental in its composition and touching in its subject, especially since it stands out in a tight frame. The knight's farewell to his beloved is represented on a background marked by naturalism with its meadow, its flowers, its wood, its river and its very beautiful colors. The painting is of the end of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century, and he is certainly French as indicated by the mtamp of the canvas merchant on the back of the canvas (the Jules Chauvin house which was active at 33 rue du Dragon in Paris between 1895 and 1937). The style of our painting is romantic, even picturesque. The knight carries the "Reichsadler", the imperial eagle of the Holy Roman Empire and the lady a satchel with various signs including bear paw prints. The style is naturalistic and reminds of the English painters of the 1890s inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites and Art Nouveau with religious and medieval themes and it is very close to nature with their settings of meadow, flowers and woods. The English art historian John Christian spoke of the last English Romantics in relation to these painters of the end of the century, Burne-Jones, Stanley Spencer or John William Waterhouse. Those motifs are also found here, of the meadow, flowers, wood and river that we often see in Waterhouse's art in particular. As for the composition, that reminds in particular of the English woman painter of Austrian origin Marianne Stokes...
