"A Girl and Her Dog" A summer day in the South Bay in SO
CAL and a girl and her dog pause for a moment.
Fine artist Carole Garland seems attracted by the special bond that
develops between the human and the
animal.
Garland abstracts the background to focus on the figure. The white
umbrellas form a horizontal momentum while the telephone poles provide
strong vertical movement. The rear figures are obfuscated but contribute to
the atmosphere and give context.
This 24"x 20" oil on a wood panel is wired for ease of hanging. The natural
wood sides can serve as
a frame.
Artist Carole Garland has studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the
University of the Americas, Mexico City. She has participated in workshops
in France and Mexico and her most recent influence is
David Gallup, fine artist, teacher and former vice-president of the
California Art Club. She has been painting in oils for over 20 years.
Garland is in art collections throughout the U.S. and has shown in venues
all over Southern California.
Her most recent group exhibits include DeFrenS Gallery, Westlake Village;
Gallery of Hermosa Beach; the Betsy Leuk Art Center, Burbank; Gallery at
West Los Angeles College; Santa Paula Art Museum; Topanga Art Gallery;
Channel Islands Studio Show, Camarillo; Kathryne Designs, Montecito. and
individual shows at
TAG Gallery, Bergamot Station and Los Angeles.

Carole Garland
Carole Garland, born and raised in Chicago, graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., She studied figure drawing and oil painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas, Mexico City. After moving to Los Angeles she studied privately with Keith Finch, Venice. Concurrent with her art pursuits, Garland worked as a magazine editor, publicist, director's assistant, book editor, and sales executive. After a brief hiatus from painting, she looked to the outdoors for inspiration and began plein air watercolor studies with Don Blaisdell, UCLA.

Coral Column

Alongside my wife Nansi, I have been lucky to explore some of the most beautiful and pristine coral reefs in the world. People often think we take pictures of the corals and paint them, but that is far from our process, which involves (at least in this case) working from an abstract design and weaving in memories and imagination until I had this image resolved. This painting is scheduled to be a part of our (Nansi’s and mine) international museum exhibition highlighting the beauty and fragility of our coral reef ecosystems, kicking off at the new ICONIC Museum in Texas in 2024.
David C. Gallup has devoted his life to the study, teaching, and creation of art. He graduated from Otis/Parsons in Los Angeles in 1990, and soon found himself supervising a staff of over thirty artists under pop art legend Hiro Yamagata on the Earthly Paradise collection and other projects. He began plein-air painting on mornings, weekends and after work, and eventually left his friend and patron Yamagata to pursue a career as a gallery artist.
