About the Item

Charles Edward Perugini was a popular and highly successful painter of classical genre, elegant beauties, and costume figurative works drawn from poetic and literary themes. His work was noted for his carefully rendered figures and his meticulous depiction of a variety of surface textures, including various fabrics, fur, stone, wood, and glass. Popular during his lifetime, he and his wife, Kate Dickens, the daughter of the celebrated novelist, maintained an active social life in the vibrant artistic milieu of late nineteenth-century London. Born Carlo Perugini in Naples in 1839. He moved with his family to London at the age of six and lived there until he was seventeen. During his time in London, he came under the tutelage of one of the most well-known painters of the day, Lord Frederic Leighton, who painted his portrait when Perugini was sixteen. Upon leaving London, Perugini returned to Naples, where he studied drawing and painting with the Academic painters Guiseppe Bonolis and Giuseppe Mancinelli. Later, Perugini moved to Paris, where he honed his artistic training with the neo-Classical painter Ary Scheffer. At the encouragement of Lord Frederic Leighton, now the President of the Royal Academy of Arts, Charles Perugini returned to London and became fully engaged with the professional artistic milieu of mid-nineteenth century London. Leighton employed Perugini as a studio assistant and exposed the young painter to the numerous artistic schools of the time including classical genre, historical genre, and Pre-Raphaelitism. Perugini received many portrait commissions and debuted at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1863—a venue at which he exhibited nearly continuously for forty years. Besides portraiture, Perugini was most well known for his highly finished, Romantic depictions of beautiful women usually dressed in historical costumes and suggestive of literary or poetic themes. His works exemplify the highly finished, academic tradition of the Victorian era and are found in many museums and private collections in the United Kingdom. THE WORK A Sideways Glance exemplifies Perugini’s talent for creating commanding genre portraits. A costume piece with hints of Pre-Raphaelitism, the painting depicts a lovely young woman with a fur cloak draped over her shoulder dressed in a red velvet slash sleeved dress. Her posture and elegance attest to a certain elevated stature while her exquisite necklace, comprised of miniature gold leaves, is reminiscent of a Romanesque design. The elaborate brocade tapestry in the background provides added texture to a composition already rich with pulchritude and opulence.

The original canvas support has been lined to a new linen support and attached to a four-member stretcher. UV light reveals two points of inpaint on cheek, as well as on the neck and the bottom of the dress.
