About the Item
Charlotte Gibbs’ constructions and "flag"and "star" paintings often reference the artist's interest in Pop art and sometimes incorporate 23 karat gold leaf in addition to oil paint, but not always. This very whimsical yet sophisticated work was inspired by an actual sign glimpsed while driving. Beautifully painted and exquisitely executed, "Art/Golf" typifies the artists' humor while demanding serious attention.
Gibbs is often commissioned to paint variations on her 'flags' and 'stars' paintings to customize scale, orientation, palette, and/or symbols of particular significance to the client.
“Art/Golf”
Acrylic, Metal, Bolts, Wood
20 x 30 Inches
Cate McQuaid, “The Boston Globe,” January 12, 2013:
“Gold brightens up the darkest days of the year at Beth Urdang Gallery, and Charlotte Andry Gibbs makes liberal use of it in her paintings. Gibbs focuses on iconography, using gold leaf and paint to re-create flags, corporate logos, and legendary works of art. While crafting a gold American flag, or a Coca-Cola or Chevrolet logo in gold feels like a too obvious jab at capitalism, all the works together draw intriguing formal connections.”
Charlotte Andry Gibbs attended Newcomb College and received a BFA in Painting from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston in 1971. She has had numerous one-person exhibitions at the Beth Urdang Gallery and has been included in over 25 group shows, primarily in the New England area where the artist resides. Most recently Gibbs had the distinct honor of being awarded First Prize in the Roddy Compeition held at the Concord Center for Visual Arts, where she was singled out among the 540 submissions by 340 artists by Katherine French, the Director.

Charlotte Gibbs’ "flag" and "star" paintings often reference the artist's interest in Pop art and sometimes incorporate 23 karat gold leaf in addition to oil paint, but not always. With its depiction of a graphically idealized British flag and obvious reference to the Beatles, "Sgt. Pepper Jack" is at once lovely and Pop. Beautifully painted and exquisitely executed, these elegant works of rich color are sophisticated examples of Gibbs' ability to invoke whimsy and can be read equally as pure geometric abstraction, and the artist's simple slightly distressed white wood frames are the perfect complement .

From GUCCI in Wonderland series
GUCCI in Wonderland series contains two parts.
First one, GUCCI in wonderland, is an inspiration that came to John Paul Fauves after doing a 10 piece collection of some Alessandro Michele art campaigns.
There was so much magic realism in the GUCCI brand and concept that transcended from being a clothing label to something more surreal. It is here when the artist decides to give a hold to his new collection for 2018 named "holy exit" and dive into this new world of colors and wonders.
The second part, Alice in Wonderland, represents the artist a world of fantasy and dreams. It seems as if the author Lewis Caroll could write like a dream.
The same concept of surrealism is what FAUVES feels about Gucci design and branding. It as if Gucci can design and create form the world of dreams, and this is what the artist wants to represent in his art GUCCI in wonderland.
ABOUT John Paul FAUVES:
John Paul Fauves (born in 1980) is a contemporary Artist from Costa Rica . His artistic journey started at a very young age after he became a student of Joaquin Rodriguez del Paso , one of the most important Costa Rican modern art tutors. John Paul spent 15 years studying and mastering his technique, and only a few years ago he finally started showcasing his work.
In his paintings he engages questions of identity as they relate to art history as well as our everyday interactions with mainstream culture and social media. Greatly inspired by modernist masters as wellas pop-artists, Fauves mixes fragments of different iconic images in vivid and colourful compositions. Of his experimental and high eclectic style, he says, “art is an expression from the soul, and the soul is somethinglimitless. This is why I am always searching for different elements to bring into the work.”
