About the Item

Bold use of chiaroscuro techniques and rich gold, green and red colors dominate this early painting, The Clientele, by California artist Christian Vincent from his series The Cake Eaters. In this picture, a plate holding a generous slice of cake hovers in front of a hefty businessman who stares back out at the viewer through the picture plane. The room in which he sits is filled with similarly dressed figures except for the woman standing just left of center with her hand on hip, back turned to the viewer and completely exposed to the waist in a black cocktail dress. Are we being invited into the scene or kept out by the man in the foreground? The strong vertical lines repeated in the painting seem to act as pathways to the inner sanctum of the painting, a sumptuous room filled with art, people, and more cake. Christian Vincent The Clientele, 1995 oil on canvas 59h x 49w in 69h x 59w x 2d in framed CHV001 Christian Vincent's dream-like paintings explore the dynamics of conformity and desire in social situations within the framework of the post-industrial world. His strong compositions feel melancholic and evoke a sense of isolation. The subjects, often youthful figures on the verge of adulthood, capture a sense of innocence confronted with the compromises of modern life. Vincent studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Vincent's work has been exhibited extensively in the United States including at the Naples Art Museum, Naples, Florida, Susquehanna Art Museum, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Frye Art Museum, Seattle, Washington, Arnot Art Museum, Elmira, New York, The Museum of Biblical Art, Dallas, Texas and Biedenham Museum, Monroe, Louisiana. His work is also included in several prominent private collections internationally.

Untitled - After Rembrandt's Susanna and the Elders, Original Oil on Panel
Located in Chicago, IL
This painting was inspired by Rembrandt's "Susanna and the Elders", especially Simon Schama's commentary on it, and the Me Too Movement. It depicts a vulnerable woman looking at the viewer, the male figure was derived from an Italian fascist sculpture. Rembrandt's painting depicts only one elder. It is assumed the other elder (or voyeur) is the viewer. This painting also contains references to global warming, surveillance capitalism and a thistle. According to the Penguin Dictionary of Symbols, thistles "like all prickly plants are a symbol of the protective belt defending the heart against external harm and attacks". This piece is framed in an ornately carved black wooden frame measuring 25.5h x 21.5w inches. William Krug...
