About the Item

Roman Charity Flemish Baroque period, first half 17th century circle of Peter Paul Rubens oil on wood panel, framed framed: 24.5 x 30 inches panel: 20 x 26 inches Provenance: Private collection, France; old wax seal attached to the reverse representing a former owners collection Condition: for a work on wooden panel of this vast age, the work is in very good and presentable condition. There are a few surface marks and areas to the paint, as shown in the photos, but overall it is very presentable. "Roman Charity" is a classical art theme depicting the story of Pero and her father, Cimon, from Roman history. Imprisoned and sentenced to starvation, Cimon is kept alive by his daughter Pero, who secretly breastfeeds him. The theme explores filial piety, sacrifice, and the reversal of typical parent-child roles. It has been depicted by artists like Rubens and Caravaggio, symbolizing selflessness and the power of familial love. The story is often seen as an allegory for charity and devotion, making it a poignant subject in Western art. Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) was a Flemish Baroque painter renowned for his dynamic compositions, vibrant color palette, and mastery of movement and sensuality. His work often depicted religious, mythological, and historical themes, blending classical traditions with his own exuberant style. Rubens was also a diplomat, scholar, and collector, making him one of the most influential artists of his time. His prolific output includes masterpieces like "The Descent from the Cross" and "The Judgment of Paris," solidifying his legacy as a central figure in European art.
