About the Item

American life is captured in this Clyde Singer painting, Mailing the letter, where he depicts a woman posting her mail in 1986. An accomplished American Scene painter, Singer successfully captured everyday life during his long career. This painting is executed in oil paint on masonite board. It is signed by the artist in the lower left and dated 1986 as well as inscribed en verso. Framed in a wide pickled finish frame with linen liner overall. Framed Dimensions: 14.75 x 17.5 Inches Image Dimensions: 9 x 12 Inches Born in Malvern, Ohio, forty miles south of Akron, Clyde Singer became known for his regionalist paintings in oil and watercolor of everyday landscapes and people. In 1933, he was awarded a scholarship to the Art Students League in New York. It was during the Depression, and he lived a Spartan existence. His teachers included John Steuert Curry, Thomas Hart Benton, Kenneth Hayes Miller, and Ivan Olinsky. Adopting the Social Realist style, he tried to paint in the same locations as George Bellows and John Sloan, and he painted many scenes of the interior of McSorley's famous saloon that Sloan had depicted. He had a long history with the Butler Institute in Youngstown, OH.
