About the Item

American life is captured in this Clyde Singer painting, Snow in the City (1954), where he depicts an everyday moment in the city. An ordinary scene, of a group of women making their way down a busy and snowy street, is elevated to a monumental moment with the captured fleeting glance painted by Singer. He accentuates this exchange by painting the women in bright and lively colors against the grey and cold of the scene and other pedestrians. An accomplished American Scene painter, Singer successfully captured everyday life during his long career. This painting is executed in oil paint on masonite board. It is signed by the artist in the lower right and dated 1954 as well as inscribed en verso "Snow in the City/ Clyde Singer 1954". Presented in an ornate, wide wood frame and ready to hang. Framed Dimensions: 36 H x 41 W x 4 D Inches Image Dimensions: 24 H x 30 W Inches Born in Malvern, Ohio, forty miles south of Akron, Clyde Singer became known for his regionalist paintings in oil and watercolor of everyday landscapes and people. In 1933, he was awarded a scholarship to the Art Students League in New York. It was during the Depression, and he lived a Spartan existence. His teachers included John Steuert Curry, Thomas Hart Benton, Kenneth Hayes Miller, and Ivan Olinsky. Adopting the Social Realist style, he tried to paint in the same locations as George Bellows and John Sloan, and he painted many scenes of the interior of McSorley's famous saloon that Sloan had depicted. He had a long history with the Butler Institute in Youngstown, OH.
