Business is slow! The Village Vendor, painted by Clyde Singer, captures the boredom and expectation waiting for the next sale. This likely New York City scene shows the bustle of the city along with the patient waiting of the food vendor. An accomplished American Scene painter, Singer successfully captured everyday life during his long career.
This painting is executed in oil paint on canvas. It is signed by the artist in the lower right, and has a gallery label en verso with the title "Village Vendor / Clyde Singer". It has not be examined outside of the frame, but the liner has been previously cut.
Framed in a wide wood finish frame with a gold molding accents.

Born in Malvern, Ohio, forty miles south of Akron, Clyde Singer became known for his regionalist paintings in oil and watercolor of everyday landscapes and people. In 1933, he was awarded a scholarship to the Art Students League in New York. It was during the Depression, and he lived a Spartan existence. His teachers included John Steuert Curry, Thomas Hart Benton, Kenneth Hayes Miller, and Ivan Olinsky. Adopting the Social Realist style, he tried to paint in the same locations as George Bellows and John Sloan, and he painted many scenes of the interior of McSorley's famous saloon that Sloan had depicted. He had a long history with the Butler Institute in Youngstown, OH.

George Schwacha was president of the American Artists Professional League and a past president of the Audubon Artists and Art Center of New Jersey. He belongs to the American Watercolor Society, The National Society of Painters in Casein, and the Philadelphia Watercolor Club. His paintings have been shown throughout the country at museums such as the Pennsylvania Academy, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC and the Birmingham Art Museum, The Butler Art Institute in Youngstown, Ohio the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, as well as in leading New Jersey and New York exhibitions, including the American Society of Arts and Letters.
