About the Item

Early 20th Century oil on board view of fishermen in the port of Collioure in the south of France, home to the Fauvists, by D Cadine. The painting is signed bottom right. The painting is titled to the back of the board. Presented in a patinated wood frame. A charming painting which vividly captures a serene street scene in the iconic town of Collioure, bathed in the warm glow of sunlight. The dome of the church of Notre Dame des Anges A charming painting which vividly captures the timeless essence of maritime life, depicting a group of fishermen engaged in pulling hefty nets onto a robust, green boat in the port of Collioure. The composition is dominated by dynamic lines that guide the viewer’s eye from the boat to the net-laden figures, accentuating their synchronized motion. The rich, earthy tones of the fishermen's clothing contrast strikingly with the boat's verdant hull, enhancing the sense of toil against the expansive, calm seascape. The dome of the church of Notre Dame des Anges stands proud in the distance standing as a silent guardian, while the subtle play of light across the water adds depth and realism. The textured brushstrokes convey the rugged texture of the nets and the resilience of the figures, celebrating the enduring struggle between man and sea. This scene resonates with themes of perseverance and community, inviting the viewer into a world where nature and labour coexist harmoniously. In the early 20th century Collioure became a center of artistic activity, with several Fauve artists making it their meeting place. André Derain, Georges Braque, Othon Friesz, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, James Dickson Innes, Léopold Survage and Tsuguharu Fujita have all been inspired by Collioure's royal castle, medieval streets, its lighthouse converted into the church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges and its typical Mediterranean bay. Collioure's cemetery contains the tomb of Spanish poet Antonio Machado, who fled here to escape advancing Francoist troops at the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939.

Mid-Century Oil on Canvas. Harbour scene. 'Farewell to the Fishermen'..
Located in Cotignac, FR
Mid 20th century oil on canvas of a crowded harbour scene, showing the local fisherman or sailors saying farewell to their families before going to sea. The painting is signed bottom right but the artist remains as yet unidentified. A colourful yet slightly brooding and dreamlike painting. The figures are faceless and the shapes loose and undefined reminiscent of the works by Balthus who in turn was influenced by LS Lowry and his scenes of industrial districts. The colours are deep and glowing and the shapes of the figures are rounded giving a sense of warmth and evoking the quality of light seen at either dawn or dusk. Balthasar Klossowski de Rola (February 29, 1908 – February 18, 2001), known as Balthus, was a Polish-French modern artist. He is known for his erotically charged images of pubescent girls, but also for the refined, dreamlike quality of his imagery. Lowry is famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial districts of North West England in the mid-20th century. He developed a distinctive style of painting and is best known for his urban landscapes peopled with human figures often referred to as "matchstick men".
