About the Item
Painted by Constantine Guys (French, 1802-1892) circa 1875 and stamped verso with Certification of Authenticity.
A painter and illustrator in colorful watercolor and wash, Constantin Guys illustrated the fashionable pursuits of the bourgeoisie that provide a valuable insight into 19th-century life in many locations. Originally from Holland, he worked for the Illustrated London News for many years until he retired in 1860. He then traveled and painted widely, doing many drawings from observation in Egypt, Turkey, Germany, Spain, Italy and the Crimea. In his lifetime, he was lauded by numerous influential critics including the writer, Charles Baudelaire, and the Impressionist painter, Claude Monet, who admired Guys' composition and his modernist style.
His mediums were ink washes and watercolors, and he often touched up his work with bright yellows and pinks and dark blues. However, "color is less important to Guys' work than is his lively line, his quick wit, and his ability to portray the life of well-dressed people in fashionable pursuits."

Constantin Guys
Constantin Guys, Ernest-Adolphe-Hyacinthe-Constantin, was a Dutch-born French Crimean War correspondent, a talented watercolor painter and an illustrator for British and French newspapers. His father had been appointed civilian chief of the French Navy in Rochefort in 1795 and was stationed in Vlissingen from 1800–06, after which the family moved to Calais. At the age of 20, Guys served in the cavalry, but only a little later toured in Greece with Lord Byron. His career as an artist didn't start until he was about 40 years old. Baudelaire called him the painter of modern life and wrote a long essay on Guys in which he extensively praised his works, under the pseudonym, Monsieur G. Robert de Montesquiou wrote a review of Guys that acknowledged Baudelaire's essay, compared Guys favorably to Whistler, and emphasized his portrayal of details of women's clothing, and horse carriages. His subjects were Second French Empire life. In the Dutch novel Au pair by W. F. Hermans, one of the main characters is fascinated by Constantin Guys. Guys died in Paris, aged 90.

He exhibited widely and with success including at the National Academy of Design (1888), the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Boston Athenaeum and at the Boston Art Club of which he was a member.
