Biography: Eugène Louis Boudin (12 July 1824 – 8 August 1898) was a pioneering French landscape painter, celebrated for his exceptional ability to capture the natural world, particularly marine scenes and skies. As one of the first French artists to paint en plein air, Boudin’s work laid the foundation for the Impressionist movement, earning him admiration from contemporaries such as Charles Baudelaire and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, who famously dubbed him the "King of the skies."
Boudin was born in Honfleur, a picturesque port town in Normandy. His father was a harbor pilot, and young Boudin worked aboard a steamboat between Honfleur and Le Havre before the family relocated to Le Havre in 1835. There, Boudin’s father opened a stationery and picture framing shop, where the young artist-to-be was introduced to the works of prominent artists. Inspired by the paintings he encountered and encouraged by established painters like Constant Troyon and Jean-François Millet, Boudin decided to pursue art full-time at age 22.
In 1850, Boudin moved to Paris after earning a scholarship. He studied under Eugène Isabey and honed his skills as a copyist at the Louvre. His travels through Flanders, Normandy, and Brittany further deepened his connection to the landscapes he loved to paint. The Dutch masters and his friendship with Johan Jongkind significantly influenced his style, leading him to paint outdoors—a technique that would become central to his work.
Boudin’s most famous pupil was Claude Monet, whom he befriended in 1857 when Monet was just 18 years old. Boudin encouraged the young artist to move beyond caricature and embrace landscape painting, instilling in him a love for natural light and color that would later define Monet's Impressionist work. Monet never forgot Boudin’s influence, and in an interview with Boudin's biographer Georges Jean-Aubry in the early 1920s, he declared, "If I have become a painter, I owe it all to Boudin."
Throughout his life, Boudin continued to gain recognition. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon, where his work caught the attention of Baudelaire, who praised his innovative approach. Despite being associated with the Impressionists and participating in their first exhibition in 1873, Boudin never considered himself a radical or an innovator.
Boudin spent his later years traveling extensively, particularly to Venice and southern France, where he sought refuge from his declining health. He received numerous accolades, including a gold medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle and a knighthood in the Légion d'honneur in 1892.
After his wife’s death in 1889, Boudin spent his final years in Deauville, returning to Normandy, where he passed away on 8 August 1898. True to his lifelong passion, he died near the English Channel, under the skies that had inspired so many of his works. Boudin was buried at the Saint-Vincent Cemetery in Montmartre, Paris, leaving behind a legacy as a master of light, sky, and sea.

Biography: Jean François Portaels, also known as Jan Portaels, was a versatile Belgian painter born on April 3, 1818, in Vilvoorde and passed away on February 8, 1895, in Schaerbeek. He was celebrated for his genre scenes, biblical stories, landscapes, portraits, and Orientalist subjects. As a teacher and director of the Academy of Fine Arts of Ghent and the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Portaels significantly impacted Belgian art, becoming a pivotal figure in the Belgian Orientalist school. His works were known for their 'everyday elegance and feminine grace,' and he played a crucial role in influencing the next generation of Belgian artists, including notable figures like Théo van Rysselberghe.
Portaels was the son of a wealthy brewer who also served as Vilvoorde's mayor. Showing an early passion for drawing, he was sent to the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1836, where he studied under François-Joseph Navez, a former student of Jacques-Louis David. Navez invited him to his studio, which was renowned at the time, allowing Portaels to refine his skills alongside other talented students like Charles de Groux and Joseph Stallaert.
In 1841, Portaels moved to Paris, enrolling at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and studying under Paul Delaroche. He became influenced by the emerging Orientalist movement, which was gaining traction in Paris. In 1842, he won the Grand Prix de Rome, which funded his travels across Italy and other regions, including Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Judea, Spain, Hungary, and Norway. These journeys profoundly influenced his artistic vision, particularly his Orientalist works.
Upon his return to Belgium in 1847, Portaels was appointed Director of the academy in Ghent. In 1849, he married Marie Hélène Navez, the daughter of his first teacher. Despite being offered the directorship of the Brussels Academy, he initially declined, opting to preserve his independence. He later accepted a teaching position at the Academy and eventually became its director in 1878, succeeding Eugène Simonis.
Portaels was known for his broad range of artistic talents, including history painting, portraiture, and genre art. He was particularly recognised for his Orientalist depictions, often portraying the 'Oriental woman' with distinctive features like arched eyebrows and almond-shaped eyes. His style, marked by charm and elegance, distinguished him from the dominant artistic movements of Classicism and Romanticism.
He was a pioneer in monumental art in Belgium, working with Jean Baptiste van Eycken to introduce fresco techniques like water glass painting...

Jean Forain was the son of a painter and decorator and was apprenticed to a visiting card engraver. He studied briefly under Gérôme and Carpeaux at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and regularly visited the Louvre, where he copied works by the masters. It is said that for a time he made a precarious living by selling small drawings in the style of Grévin. He went on to collaborate on various publications as a draughtsman and columnist, starting in 1876 on La Cravache and then collaborating on the newspapers Le Journal Amusant, Le Figaro and L'Écho de Paris. This introduced him to the diverse worlds of Paris society - the world of the theatre, of shows, and of literature - where he wryly noted the habits and shortcomings particular to each. This led him to follow a route very characteristic of this period, already seen in the work of Steinlen, Caran d'Ache and Toulouse-Lautrec in the journals La Pléiade, La Vogue...
