About the Item

Francis Casanova (London 1732/33- Vorderbruhl, Vienna 1803) Horsemen's stop Oil on canvas, 37.5 x 67.5 cm Framed, 48 x 78 cm Critical Record Prof. Alberto Crispo The unpublished painting presented here depicts a horsemen's halt within a mountain landscape. The horseman in the center is controlling the situation, the two in the foreground, lying on the ground, are resting from the exertions of the journey, and the one in the background is intent on tying up baggage, while on the left other figures of soldiers on horseback can be seen in the distance. The canvas is the work of Francesco Casanova, as revealed by comparisons with other proofs by the artist such as the Knight of the Louvre or the other passed on May 17, 2007 at Finarte in Goito, lot 162, not to mention the other canvas with battle scene that appeared at Sotheby's in London on November 8, 1978, lot 9. In all the compared specimens we find the same liquid rendering of color, partly derived from the study of the Venetians, and the very obvious Nordic taste, echoing the models of Philips Wouwermann and Jan van Huchtenburg. Francesco Casanova was born in 1732/33 in London, where his parents were acting. He trained in Venice with the Guardi, in Florence with Simonini, and in Paris with Charles Parrocel: shaping his visual imagery, however, were also the Bergognone's Battles, which were particularly popular with patrons in that turn of the year. Having reached full artistic maturity, Casanova was active between Dresden and Paris, where he garnered particularly positive opinions with respect to his work even from the creator of the mammoth Encyclopedie project, Diderot. While in Paris, Casanova painted two of his most famous works, the Battles of Fribourg and Lens for the Bourbon palace of the Prince of Condé (now in the Louvre). Later it appears that the artist returned to Dresden, but, from the end of 1783, he moved to Vienna, along with his better-known brother James, and lived here until his death that occurred in nearby Vorderbruhl in 1803. During his Viennese residency the painter also worked for Tsarina Catherine II of Russia, executing canvases depicting episodes from the Russo-Turkish wars (1769-74 and 1787-92). Francis Casanova had a large school and among his pupils should be mentioned at least the battalionists Jacques-Philippe de Loutherbourgh the younger, Jean-Pierre Norblin de la Gourdaine, Ignace Duvivier and Jean-Baptiste Le Paon.

Knight Van Douw Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17/18th Century Flemish Art Italy
By Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677)

After Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677) The stop of a traveler on horseback near a post station Oil painting on canvas 45 x 55 cm In frame cm. 55 x 65 In this pleasant painting, depicting a knight parked near a post station, the Flemish tradition is based on a strong Italianizing sensitivity, especially by observing the setting and its peculiar brightness. The mixture of genres and the particular style of execution make it easy to trace the authorship back to a Nordic author but active in Rome, or strongly influenced by the style in vogue in the Eternal city, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: we are referring, in in particular, to a follower of the Antwerp Simon Johannes van Douw. The chromatic elegance and refinement with which he outlines the figures are typical aspects of his painting. The scene takes place outside a cottage, probably a post office for travelers, where a modest family divides the tasks by assisting the knights. We see a young boy who hands water to the horse before he sets off again, the father is preparing to feed him with straw and the mother who instead takes care of the little son. The Italian reminiscences, evident in our painting, have been absorbed by many Northern European authors such as Nicolaes Berchem, Philips Wouwerman or Johannes Lingelbach, all inspired by the leader Pieter van Laer...
