About the Item

Scope of Franz Richard Unterberger (1837-1902) In Tivoli Oil on canvas, 62 x 48 cm Framed, 79 x 69 cm The work shows us one of the best-known and most appreciated views in modern-day landscape painting: the city of Tivoli and, especially, the Temple of Vesta, located in the northern part where the acropolis once stood. The shot of the temple is taken from the southern part of Tivoli, from an area further out from the ancient town center from which one would not have been able to frame the temple in its entirety, including the buildings that surround it and also part of the steep slope that descends to the verdant Aniene valley, also often depicted by foreign Italian vedutists for its peculiar and wild beauty. The fusion of nature and ancient ruins creates an evocative combination that so appealed to the public and to nineteenth-century artists that many views starring these places were produced, particularly among the northern European painters of Romanticism who were struck by the poetic charm of Tivoli and the surrounding natural scenery during their travels in Italy. Among the various authors we can mention, remaining on the most famous: the Swiss Rudolf Müller, the English William Turner and Frederick Henry Henshaw, the Dutch Abraham Teerlink and the German Carl Morgenstern, who continued the tradition of painters who already in previous centuries chose to portray the famous ruins of the Latium city. Moving in this sphere, we find tangencies with the work of that host of painters who descended from the north to admire and portray the coasts, islands and cities of Italy: among them the closest turns out to be Franz Richard Unterberger, an artist born around Innsbruck and later moved to Munich to attend the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts; inspired initially by his native Alpine landscapes, he would later find new scenery to immortalize through his brush thanks to his travels to Norway, Denmark, England and Scotland. In the second part of his career he undertook new journeys, similar to other colleagues of his contemporaries, traceable to the itineraries of the Grand Tour in Italy: he first touched on Venice and then headed south through the Adriatic coast until he reached the Amalfi coast, Capri and Naples, cities and places by which he was greatly impressed and of which he drew numerous depictions. During this journey he also came across the Roman countryside and thus also the iconic Tivoli, from which he drew inspiration to paint this kind of landscape backgrounds in which those characteristic features of his art can be found: an effective and spontaneous verismo that includes in the scene pieces of everyday reality through the human figures that populate the city's shattered ruins; also noteworthy is the co-presence of natural elements, well integrated and with non-secondary roles in the harmonious composition of the painting. The clarity of the colors perfectly recalls the warm and sunny atmospheres of Italy, which greatly impressed the Austrian during his travels, while the fluidity of the drafting sketches the figures in the foreground with broad brushstrokes without, however, disregarding a precise rendering that becomes lenticular when observing the architectural elements in the distance. The success of his works was widespread throughout Europe, managing to win the interest of Italian, German and French collectors and amateurs, with whom he interfaced more in the latter part of his career, as he decided to open a personal studio near Paris. The idyllic and picturesque character of this view is characteristic of his production and he managed to maintain it throughout his career, without sudden changes and adapting his style to very different subjects and contexts with consistency and linearity.
