About the Item

➡️ Beautiful study Landscape⬅️ Title: Sur les bords du Loing (Seine et Marne France) Jean Baptiste Camille Corot Medium: Oil on canvas Period: Likely mid-19th century Framing: A wide, classical gold-leaf frame enhances the old master style and adds gravitas It is signed ⭐ "Corot." ⭐ While I cannot certify that this painting is an original work by Corot, I have included several reference photographs of signatures from paintings held at the Musée d'Orsay Paris, as well as an artwork that employs a similar chromatic palette." On the back of the painting: "Etude sur les bords du Loing - Montigny" - (Study on the river banks -Loing Montigny ) "Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot was a French landscape and portrait painter, widely regarded as a pivotal figure in 19th-century art. Born in Paris in 1796, Corot initially followed his family's wishes and worked in the textile trade, but by the age of 26, he committed fully to painting. He became known for his lyrical landscapes, blending classical structure with a sensitive rendering of light and atmosphere. Corot was associated with the Barbizon School, a group of painters who broke from academic tradition to paint nature directly. His early works show the influence of Neoclassicism, but over time he developed a looser, more naturalistic style that foreshadowed Impressionism. Though he painted many Italian and French landscapes, Corot also created striking figure paintings in his later years. His delicate handling of tone and form made him a bridge between academic tradition and modern art. Corot remained modest and generous throughout his life, supporting younger artists like Camille Pissarro and Berthe Morisot. He died in Paris in 1875, leaving behind a legacy of over 3,000 works and a profound influence on modern landscape painting." ⭐Structural Analysis⭐ 🟢Composition: The painting is horizontally oriented, reinforcing the breadth and serenity of the landscape. Two figures, likely peasants or travelers, sit in the right foreground beneath windswept trees. The dark, dense tree mass to the left contrasts with the open, illuminated horizon to the right. 🟢Color Palette Dominated by earth tones, ochres, muted greens, and soft golden hues—hallmarks of Corot’s mature style. The sky is painted in pale blue and grey washes, fading softly into the distant horizon. Light filters gently through the center-right, possibly depicting sunset or early evening light, giving the painting a warm, melancholic atmosphere. 🟢Brushwork Soft, fluid, and somewhat hazy—typical of Corot’s tonalist technique. Trees and foliage are depicted with broad, suggestive strokes, rather than fine detail, enhancing the atmospheric effect. The figures are rendered with minimal detail, keeping the focus on the emotive landscape rather than narrative. ⭐Subject Matter and Theme⭐ This is a quiet rural scene, typical of Corot’s lyrical landscapes. It embodies a sense of tranquility, nostalgia, and contemplation. The inclusion of seated figures implies human harmony with nature, not dominance. The curving trees leaning over the figures evoke a natural embrace or protection, possibly symbolizing nature’s sheltering role. Technique: oil on canvas 36x54.5 cm / 14.2x21.5 inch With a golden frame; 46.2x65cm /18.18x25.6 inch ⏩It is signed COROT ⏪ ⭐Condition : ⭐- Very good condition for a painting from 19th century. Only one restoration in the middle of artwork (back) Ready to hang. ⭐Provenance:⭐ Private collection - France. (Shipping from France is fast 4-6 days.)
