Giovanni Battista del Verrocchio
By Giovanni Battista del Verrocchio, Madonna and Child with St. John the Baptist

16th Century

About the Item

Giovanni Battista del Verrocchio, known as The Master of Volterra (Florence 1494 - 1569) Madonna with Child and San Giovannino Oil on panel, 63 x 50 cm Frame: 92 x 80 cm The stylistic elements of this panel reveal the hand of a talented master of the Florentine school, active in the first half of the 16th century. A talented artist influenced by such great masters as Andrea del Sarto, Rosso Fiorentino, Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio, and especially Domenico Puligo. Precisely because of these influences, one can reasonably attribute this work to Giovan Battista Verrocchi, also known as Giambattista del Verrocchio (Florence 1494-1564), a nephew of the famous Andrea del Verrocchio and, most likely, identifiable with the so-called Master of Volterra. In 16th-century Florence one of the most important workshops was that of the Verrocchi (Or del Verrocchio), of which the descendants of the famous Andrea del Verrocchio, master of Leonardo and Botticelli and Perugino, were the owners. The first member of the dynasty was indeed John Baptist, son of Thomas, brother of Andrew. His personality has only been traced in his later years, which makes this panel an important new piece toward the complete decipherment of his pictorial history. In fact, Giovanni Battista's name has been, by Alessandro Nesi, linked to the production of the so-called Maestro di Volterra (A. Nesi, I verrocchi pittori fiorentini del Cinquecento, Maniera p. 3). Under the name Maestro di Volterra referred a conspicuous number of religious paintings for private devotion very close to the style of Domenico Puligo and Andrea del Sarto, which Federico Zeri had already begun to group under a single author beginning with the Sacra Conversazione in the Conservatorio sei Santi Pietro e Lino in Volterra. Alessandro Nasi has noticed, in a series of paintings, remarkable stylistic coherences. Immediately recognizable features are the drapery of the robes, which seem at times not to follow the course of the body mass underneath, a schematism that harks back to Sartesque works; the faces, especially those of the adults, have elongated, straight, and very thin noses; small, round eyes with heavy eyelids; and a chin made accentuatedly spherical with a small draft. Moreover, all these features are easily readable in the face of the Madonna in the present painting. Giovan Battista married the daughter of sculptor Baccio da Montelupo and lived his entire life in Florence, in the Santacroce district. Giovan Battista's works refer in part to the art of the so-called "Florentine eccentrics," rediscovered by Federico Zeri in the seminal 1962 essay. Giovanni Battista enrolled in the Arte dei Medici e deli speziali in 1516 and in the Compagnia di San Luca in 1515, and is reported to have owned a workshop on Via del Garbo at least as early as 1521, entrusted to him by the Benedictine friars of the Florentine Badia, for whom he worked throughout his life making paintings and decorating numerous liturgical objects. Important commission was the altarpiece depicting The Three Archangels Gabriel, Michael and Raphael with Tobiolo for the Abbey of Santa Maria, Buggiano (Pistoia) To validate the attribution, it is enough to compare this work with others made by Verrocchi such as the Madonna and Child with St. John in the Pinacoteca di Siena, the version in the Fesch Museum or even the Madonna and Child with St. John and St. Anne from Private Collection. In these paintings, similar to the painting in question, there is a stylistic approach influenced by Andrea del Sarto, Rosso Fiorentino, and Puligo, as well as a balance between the more pronounced Mannerist tendencies and the more eccentric Florentine painting tradition. Such features are typical of Giovanni Battista Verrocchi's compositions during his period of greatest creative fervor The item is in good condition

Maurice Kish 20th century genre painting
By Maurice Kish
Located in New York, NY
Framed Maurice Kish (American, 1895-1987) Genre painting of a man carrying water buckets Signed lower left: Maurice Kish Framed dimensions: 12 1/8 x 9 1/8 in. Maurice Kish, painter and poet, was born in Dvinsk, Russia (also known as Denenburg while under Russian rule) which is now known as Daugavpils, Latvia. Dvinsk was one of the leading Jewish cities in Russia in the 19th century, and a center of Jewish culture and debate. It was also a poor city where an estimated 30% of the Jewish population applied for aid in 1898. (1) Maurice (Moishe) Kish was born February 19, 1895 (2). A census conducted 2 years earlier indicated 330 industrial establishments owned by Jews, and 99 owned by non Jews. The dominant trades were tailoring and shoemaking. (1) "Kish… immigrated to New York in his teens. He pursued studies in art at Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design, gaining a foundation solid enough to support himself as a painter and to place his work in exhibitions, by the late 1930's, at such prestigious venues as the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art." (3) Kish also exhibited at the New York World's Fair in 1939, and by 1945 had exhibited 13 times at the National Academy and won 30 art prizes. He was a member of numerous art associations, including the Educational Alliance, the American Veteran Society of Artists, and the Brooklyn Art Alliance. (4) During the Depression Kish often portrayed "factory and street scenes in New York with the tired faces of workers revealing the weight of wage-labor upon their lives." (5) Kish himself was no stranger to the proletarian life - he was a skilled craft worker for decades in a factory which made glass vases. He was short and sturdy, a former amateur boxer, and also served as a dance instructor in the Catskills. In the 1970's, at the age of 75, he was still playing handball in the famous Brighton courts. (6) By the last decade of his life, however, he had lost his eyesight and was infirm. Kish lived most of his adult life in Brooklyn, initially in Brownsville but mainly in Williamsburg, and then Brighton Beach where he became enchanted by Coney Island...
