About the Item

Circle of Giovan Battista Piazzetta (1683-1754), 18th century Christ the Savior Mundi Oil on canvas, 81 x 64 cm Framed, 90 x 72 cm This painting is configured within the eighteenth-century Veneto painting scene. The 'use of delicate colors, the curved forms and the decorative presence of cherubs, like an architectural element, frames this work in the Rococo style; the chiaroscuro, though present, does not generate too intense contrasts, and the background brings more brightness, though filtered through a supposed cloud cover. The light tones continue in the delicate highlights of Christ's hair and garments, as well as on his diaphanous-skinned face, similar to that of the two cherubim. Christ's features appear somewhat original, almost as if derived from a portrait, in that the chubby, beardless face makes them somewhat childlike; contrasting these details are the long hair and the gaze fixed toward the viewer, serious and solemn. The period and geographic extraction lead this work back to the examples of artists close to Giovan Battista Piazzetta (1683-1754), a Venetian painter active in the first half of the eighteenth century and a pupil of Antonio Molinari (1655-1704), also Venetian and referable to this style of painting. From the Baroque to the Rococo, the artistic language became sweetened while maintaining that tonal vividness that we also find in this work, whose subject lends itself to a deeper reflection on the figure of Jesus the savior of the world, represented by the cruciferous globe, and lord of the cosmos. Such ancient and grandiose iconography is therefore rendered with the right expressive gravity, leaving room for greater serenity and relaxation on the part of Christ, to which must be added the lovely cherubs on the right, useful both for decorative reasons and to dilute the Savior's intense gaze.

The present painting is a very interesting testimony of the creative process of Matteo Bonechi, one of the leading artists on the Tuscan art scene in the early 18th century. The canvas in question is in fact the last preparatory model made by Bonechi before he executed an altarpiece for the church of San Filippo Neri in Cortona in 1716. The scene presented here is that of the Presentation of Jesus, when, forty days after his birth, the child is ransomed through an offering in the temple and placed in the hands of Simeon, who prophesies his future: the coming of the Messiah...
