About the Item

Giovanni Stefano Danedi known as Montalto (Treviglio, 1612 - Milan, 1690) St. John with the lamb Oil on panel, 35 x 27.5 cm Framed, 51 x 47 cm The work presented here constitutes, together with the one preserved at the Musei Civici di Monza, one of the two versions of San Giovannino con l'agnello made by the Bergamo painter Giovanni Stefano Danedi known as il Montalto (Treviglio, 1612 - Milan, 1690), among the most prolific and significant interpreters of Baroque painting in Lombardy. The artist's typical formalisms, recurring extensively within his pictorial corpus, such as the emotional charge conferred by warm luminosity and strong chiaroscuro contrasts, also characterize the canvas under consideration, in which the nude St. John, seated on the ground on what iconography has it that is a flap of camel skin, is immortalized intent on caressing the little lamb crouched next to him, in a very dark and barely visible woodland setting. The canvas is rich in iconographic references summed up by the saint's embrace of the lamb: as recounted in the Gospels, it was the adult John the Baptist himself who pointed out Jesus as the "lamb of God" who had gone along the banks of the Jordan to receive baptism. The iconicity of the San Giovannino, characterized by a chubby little body and the typical hair with blond curls, can also be seen in the musician angels frescoed in the Chapel of San Vittore in Milan, and in those found in the Pietà or again in the Oration of Christ in the Garden of Olives, both preserved at the Brera Art Gallery. Consider also the little angels painted by the artist himself within the decorations of Monza Cathedral, the Certosa di Pavia and in those of the altarpiece with St. Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi for the Milanese Church of S. Maria del Carmine: equal the attitude, equal the playful exuberance. Montalto, Giuseppe's younger brother and a disciple of Guido Reni, picked up the artistic legacy of Morazzone between the 1730s and 1740s, juxtaposing it with the innovations of Francesco Cairo. Orlandi was the first critic to report his biography, within the Abbecedario pittorico of 1704. The first work signed "Stefano Daneda," namely a Lamentation of Christ preserved at the Museo di Castelvecchio in Verona, allows us to identify an early stylistic phase in the artist's corpus, which in later years turned to Venetian and Genoese influences. Around 1648, after a brief stay in Rome, his artistic language was updated in a decidedly Baroque direction, as documented by the frescoes he executed that same year in the chancel of Monza Cathedral. Of inescapable importance in the material conception of his works were the suggestions mediated by Giovanni Battista Carlone and Domenico Piola, Procaccini and Discepoli (the robust naturalism and warm, reddish-brown tonality also seems to look to Genoa), although the artist was later able to embrace a more Cortonesque imprint, as can be seen in the frescoes of profane themes in Villa Frisani (1656), designed by the Milanese Francesco Maria Richini in 1654 in Corbetta (also famous is the studiolo on the ground floor, with its depiction of the allegories of the four seasons where there is one of Richini's rare portraits). It is precisely in this pictorial cycle that Danedi expresses his adherence to the new Baroque language-which in Milan has its major points of reference in Pietro Nuvolone and Storer. He would stick to it more and more in later years, as shown especially in the frescoes of the sixth and seventh right chapels in the Certosa di Pavia (1671-1688) and the decoration of the seventeenth chapel and dome of the Sanctuary of Sacro Monte in Varallo. Stefano Montalto's career, deployed with equal generosity on both the private and public sides, was crowned by his appointment as "first Director" of the new Academy of St. Luke in Milan, which opened its doors in 1688.
