About the Item

Giuseppe Zais (Forno di Canale 1709 - Treviso 1784) - Landscape with shepherds and spinner. 48 x 63.5 cm without frame, 59 x 74.5 cm with frame. Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame (not signed). The painting is accompanied by a critical note by Prof. Ugo Ruggieri. Condition report: Lined canvas. Good state of conservation of the pictorial surface. Giuseppe Zais (Forno di Canale 1709 – Treviso 1781) was one of the most famous Venetian landscape painters, known for his depictions of bucolic scenes featuring stylized figures of shepherds, flocks and washerwomen set in an idyllic rural landscape inspired by the Venetian countryside. He trained in Venice, being able to observe the works of his illustrious predecessor Marco Ricci and was a contemporary of Francesco Zuccarelli from whom he drew the grace he achieved in his most refined works. Zais' style was distinguished by a much more rural depiction of the Arcadian landscape compared to his eighteenth-century colleagues; his compositions, although inspired by Rococo, are enveloped in a different sense of realism given by the use of more marked and brown tones and by a material and pasty application of color. Our painting is a work of high quality, executed by the Belluno master at the height of his maturity. The protagonists of the scene are the four figures in the center, well described and outlined by Zais in a moment of peace and serenity on the banks of the stream. We find a mother with her child who have come to get water from the river, while behind them a spinner is approached by a young man lying on the grass with a hat and flute in his hand. The entire scene is surrounded by a landscape executed with vibrant brush strokes and little outlined that gives an intimate and idealized sense to the entire representation. - This item is sold with a certificate of authenticity with legal validity. - Further details on the condition report are available upon request. *Please keep in mind that this work has not yet obtained the certificate of free export from Italy from the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage.
