About the Item
Artist statement:
My work as a figurative painter examines my experience as a gay male living in Mexico today. My early paintings and drawings are explicitly erotic in that they focus exclusively on human flesh, depicting the vulnerability of self-portraiture through the lens of intimacy and sex. Over time, I began to paint my friends in similar states of being—leveraging a seductive, mystical realism in the works to evoke each subject’s physicality and overarching sense of desire.
While these self-portraits allowed me to explore, and ultimately uncover, who I was as a gay male artist, lately I’ve been compelled to work more metaphorically and bring to life more subdued sexual motifs like flowers, complete with varied textures and colors that echo the human body but allow the viewer to draw their conclusions. In both portraits and still lifes, key themes tie the works together. These include the body, sexuality, fragility, and undertones of violence. The latter lies beneath the surface of the scene featured on the canvas, inviting the viewer to take stock of the composition and only then dig deeper into the painting’s history.
After receiving Mexico’s coveted FONCA (National Fund for Culture and the Arts) scholarship, I began to research and subsequently fictionalize elements of Mexican history, particularly milestones from the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘90s, blending past and present to inspire a sense of contemplation regarding where the nation is today.

Gonzalo García’s work explores the influence of Western culture and European painting on Mexican art, focusing on 17th- and 18th-century still lifes, Flemish Baroque bodegones, and more recently, 15th-century medieval painting. He reimagines symbolic elements, textiles, and furniture from these styles within his own queer perspective, creating pastel-toned works that contrast historical aesthetics with his personal experiences as a contemporary queer artist.
In recent years, García has developed a project examining the dialogue between 1970s Mexican cinema and contemporary painting. Drawing on films as cultural records, he uses them to reflect on memory and the societal concerns of their time. His series Cachorros intertwines two sources: Alfredo González...

Two male Nudes. Painting.Pastel, carbon pencil, ink on archival paper mounted
By Celso José Castro Daza
Located in Miami Beach, FL
Drawing on paper is his basic work tool, some are sketches of his surviving works, others are sketches of moments he documents.
Undefined by medium, Celso Castro’s works each carry the presence of the artist’s hand through the transparency of their process. Castro’s oeuvre is strongly divided between his photomontage assemblies and watercolor paintings: the prior is marked by the labor-intensive deconstruction of portrait photographs and the latter, by the seemingly frenzied recreation of a past encounter rendered in the drips and scribbles of paint and ink. Both discriminating in what they reveal of the subject, his photomontage and watercolor portraits exude raw sexuality through the combination of Castro’s mark-making and gaze. Celso Castro’s work is a bare-bulb erotic photo foray into the underbelly of Colombia’s drug world. Castro’s labor-intensive, photo-collage works of drug kingpins, smugglers, hitmen, countrymen, street vendors, soldiers, paramilitaries, kidnappers, and pimps pose showing with pride their erect penises...
