About the Item
A delightful 1940 painting of two women lounging in the Vermont wilderness by artist Harold Haydon. Haydon had a summer compound in Calais, Vermont, where he often painted. Images size: 20" x 17", Framed size: 23 1/2" x 20 1/2". Provenance: Estate of the artist.
Harold Emerson Haydon was born in 1909 in Fort William, Ontario, Canada. He came to Chicago with his family in 1917 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1941. Haydon attended the University of Chicago Lab School and the University of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Philosophy. He also studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in the early 1930s. Haydon became a Professor of Art at the University of Chicago from 1944-1975 and later taught as an instructor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1975-1981. From 1975-1982, Haydon also taught as an Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University. He is recognized for his vibrant, painterly landscapes of New England and Canada, as well as his dynamic city views of Chicago and its lakefront.
Harold Haydon served as the longtime art critic of the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper from
1963-1985. He died in Chicago in 1994.

Harold Haydon
Harold Emerson Haydon was born in Fort William, Ontario, Canada in 1909. Haydon came to Chicago with his family in 1917 and became a naturalized American citizen in 1941. He attended the University of Chicago Lab School and the University of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Philosophy. He also studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago. Haydon was a long-time Professor of Art at the University of Chicago, teaching from 1944-1975. He became an instructor at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1975-1981. Haydon also taught as an Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University from 1975-1982. In addition, Haydon served as the noted art critic of the Chicago Sun-Times from 1963-1985. He died in Chicago in 1994.

Richard Turner's work is mainly figurative painting, within Arcadian landscape settings similar to the compositions in renaissance and mannerist art. Turneramon's first stay in Egypt had a significant effect on his painting style and content. His change from hard edge abstraction to synthetic renaissance is evident in his 5ft x 7ft painting; 'The Resurrection of Tutankhamen', leading to his work being labelled post modernist.
