A beautifully painted large scale genre scene of a family in a cottage interior, by Haynes King. A young mother can be seen holding an orange for a small child in the centre of the room. As the baby reaches for the toy she is steadied by her father, who has taken a break from mending his net. Meanwhile, the grandmother can be seen sitting in an armchair beside an older child as they both watch on.
Haynes King was a genre painter who was born in Bridgetown, Barbados in 1831. At the age of 23 he came to England where he studied at Leigh’s Academy and became a notable genre figure painter. He started exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists from 1857 and became a member in 1864. He also exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, British Institute, New Watercolour Society, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and elsewhere from 1855-1904.
He was recorded as living in Victoria Road, Kentish Town in 1855 and shared a house with the artist Thomas Faed (1826-1900) who had a great influence on his style. He married Annie Elizabeth Wilson (née Preston) a widow, on 14 August 1866 and they lived at 12 Albert Street in Camden. By 1881, they had moved to a short distance away to 7 North Villas.
After the death of his wife in the late 1880’s, he went to live with the artist Henry John Yeend King (1855-1924) (no relation) and his family. He moved with them a couple of times before settling at 103, Finchley Road in 1896. In early 1904, his health began to deteriorate rapidly which sadly led to him ending his own life on 17 May, 1904.
King’s works usually depict women involved in small domestic incidents in humble interiors, although he did produce a series of paintings of young women in idyllic landscapes. His work can be found in many art galleries and museums including the Atkinison Art Gallery, Beverley Art Gallery, Laing Art Gallery, Leeds Art Gallery, New Art Gallery Walsall, Victoria Art Gallery (Bath) and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

A wonderful genre painting by Charles Hunt of two men and two boys with horses and other animals in a cottage. A farmer and his two sons can be seen eating lunch at a table in rustic interior as a visitor approaches. Perhaps encouraged by the boys, a piglet seems to have found its way onto the table whilst a rabbit and guinea pig eat cabbage leaves on the floor. To the far right, a horse is shown in a stable area along with some piglets. To the far left, a terrier waits on the step by its master.

Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1869
Image size: 10.5 inches x 15.5 inches
Size including frame: 21.5 inches x 26.5 inches
This charming cottage scene by Alfred Provis features a woman preparing supper by a fire with her young daughter. As the mother peels the turnips and places them in the pot, the girl’s attention is drawn to the kitten feeding from a saucer. The dress and hat of the woman bears a similarity to those found Provis’s other scenes of Welsh cottage interiors. The artist was known to have visited North Wales around the time this painting was produced. In 1869, he exhibited a work entitled ‘Interior of a Welsh Farmhouse’ at the Royal Society of British Artists. Given the level of detail in the painting and the fact that it is in such an impressive original frame, it is possible this is the same painting as the one exhibited.
Alfred Provis was a genre painter born on 18 February, 1818 in Chippenham, Wiltshire. He was the son of John Provis, a timber merchant and his second wife Ann Banks. He spent time in London being tutored by the historical and portrait artist John Wood (1801-1870) before returning to Chippenham. He began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1843, continuing to exhibit there regularly until 1886. He made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1846 with a work entitled ‘A Cottage Door...

Antique Swedish Oil Canvas Painting Romantic Interior Family Scene Monkey 1883
Located in Portland, OR
A fine & large antique oil on canvas painting by Bengt Nordenberg (1822-1902), Sweden, dated 1883.
Nordenberg is recognized as one of Sweden's most celebrated 19th century artists, his work epitomizes Swedish Romanticism and this painting is a wonderful representation of that style. The painting depicts an interior scene of a mother holding an infant in front of an open heath, with a fire burning in the grate, above the fire there are racks of meat hanging and above that are hams hanging. The infant has evidently just woken from a nap and his cradle sits next to his mother's chair, his brother sitting on the floor with his monkey & the carrying case he transports the animal to beg for money, the monkey humorously sits with his begging plate outstretched to the boy's mother, much to her consternation!
The painting is signed and dated lower left, it is in very good condition and is housed in the original gilded composition and limewood frame, Nordenberg's record for a painting at auction is over $91,500, this is a fine example of the artist's work and is ready to hang on your wall. Bloomsbury Fine Art & Antiques ship globally, very well packed & insured to ensure safe delivery.
Bengt Nordenberg (1822-1902) was a master of Swedish Romanticism.
