Charming painting of colorful Gallic "Le Coq Gaulois" roosters by listed California artist Helen Enoch Gleiforst (American,1903-1997), circa 1950.
Born in Crete, Nebraska, Helen Gleiforst moved with her family to San Diego, California. Gleiforst settled in Beverly Hills where she began to paint. Her teachers included Nicolai Fechin, George Melcher, John Hubbard Rich, Dedrick Stuber and Nell Walker Warner who influenced her floral paintings. Gleiforst also lived in Carmel, California. Signed "Gleiforst" lower right. Giltwood and linen frame. Image 18"H x 24"W.

Helen Enoch Gleiforst
Gleiforst was born in Nebraska but soon moved to Oregon where she studied at the University of Oregon. She then settled in Beverly Hills where she began to paint. Her teachers included Nicolai Fechin, George Melcher, John Hubbard Rich and Nell Walker Warner for Still Life studies. Gleiforst primarily painted plein air, as well as landscapes and florals. During her lifetime, Helen Gleiforst frequently exhibited her artwork including one-person shows at Stanford University, Ebell Society of the Federated Women’s Clubs, the Beverly Hills and Westwood Women's Clubs, and at Clearwater Junior High School. In 2006, her work was featured among top California plein-aire painters in Santa Barbara in the Sullivan Goss Gallery exhibition titled “Early California. Gleiforst lived in Carmel, California.

About the Artist:
Raised where the East Coast suburbs filtered into the woods and farms, Scott Conary (Rhode Island School of Design, BFA ’93) creates expressive oil paintings with rich surfaces of everyday objects and places, often those with which we have complicated and ambiguous relationships. Pulled from their context, these objects say something about how we interact with the world and one another. These are stories of the arbitrary nature of beauty, of melancholy, of fleeting triumph, and the camouflage of time: the mess and splendor of the broken egg, the weed that fights to survive in the gaps of our attention, the weathered door used for generations but now forgotten, and so on.
Fueling and inspiring this work is his young daughter’s battle with complicated heart defects, her experiences with disability, and the impact this has had on those around her. This has directed his focus toward the narratives and tensions in the familiar, and is why he wanders deeper into the thicket of representational work.
