Herb Kornfeld
Oil Painting - The Lovers - painted in France

1995

About the Item

This is part of a series of Californian and Europe oil landscapes, painted by the late American artist Herb Kornfeld. This piece is called "The Lovers" because the artist was painting a scene down by a river in Brittany France, when a couple entered into his frame of vision, in the midst of a passionate discussion, framed by the sunlight and the natural beauty of their surroundings. ---- Herb Kornfeld was born in Great Falls, Montana, and trained in Los Angeles at the Chouinard School of Art. Kornfeld has journeyed to China, Sweden, France, Greece, England, Mexico, Canada, and throughout the United States, painting the landscape and its architecture as he saw them in colorful, faceted and geometric shapes, alluding to Cubism and Impressionism. In the latter part of his life, Kornfeld returned to California and using broad, chromatic palette, captured the brilliant light on the coast, hills, valleys of California. With bold use of color and loose, flat brushstrokes -- Kornfeld’s uniquely modernist aesthetic presents each piece as a visually arresting interpretation of the moment. Kornfeld's paintings can be found in private and public collections throughout the world. A selection of his exhibitions include – the Long Beach Museum of Art, The Downey Museum of Art, The U. S. Navy Museum (Washington D.C), Charles M. Russell Museum, Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, The American Academy of Arts, and UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund Tour)- International Tour.

48 x 60 in. "For Helen" oil on canvas - black and white oil painting
By Alexis Portilla
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This is a large monochromatic oil painting on canvas by Alexis Portilla. Oil on Canvas 48x60" Alexis Portilla obtained his Master's of Fine Arts at Columbia University in 1990 and has been working as an artist for more than 20 years. We showcase this talented artist's virtuosity ranging from the strong, bold and big to the fragile, vulnerable small exquisite pieces in beeswax and oil. Influenced by the emotion of artistic expression in music, poetry and literature, the artist finds bold expression in color, lines and shapes that resemble pictographs, and texture. Often, his pictographs depict vessels because of its significance to many aspects of the human condition. His bold linear lines, use of symbols, pictographs and strong colors create atmospheric abstracts. “Using simple forms and creating swathes of rich texture, Alexis Portilla builds atmospheric abstract paintings that convey a sense of time having passed. Brushy areas of color suggest the indeterminacy of memory, while bold linear forms speak for the present.” Meredith Mendelsohn, Art News magazine review. He has shown in group and solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally. His works have been commissioned by major corporations, universities and for private collections.
