The work depicts Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, the night He was captured and arrested. The angels try and comfort him, with the symbolic 'take this cup from me' hovering above.
The inscription on the back reads,
"Souvenir de Rome
Béni par N. S. Père
Le pape Léon XIII.
Le 15 Avril 1891"
which translates into English as:
"Souvenir from Rome
Blessed by Our Holy Father
Pope Leo XIII
April 15, 1891"
This appears to be a religious relic or keepsake that was blessed by Pope Leo XIII during his papacy, which lasted from 1878 to 1903. It likely holds sentimental or spiritual value for the owner, serving as a souvenir from a pilgrimage or visit to Rome.
