Jamie Wyeth
Corbett House, Monhegan Island, Maine, 1973
Signed lower left
Watercolor on paper
20 3/4 x 28 1/2 inches
The house depicted in the present work is on Monhegan Island, Maine and was built in 1908. It sits on the path out to Burnt Head, one of the three cliffs on the eastern side of Monhegan Island. Helen Corbett bought it in 1953 and owned it until 1980.
Jamie Wyeth is one of the leading contemporary artists of our time. His paintings range from intensely perceptive portraits of people, places, and animals he knows well to imaginary fabulist scenes, touched with humor and the quiddity of life. The son of artist Andrew Wyeth, Jamie has been drawing and painting nearly all his life. At age twelve, he began formal training in drawing, composition, and oil painting with his aunt Carolyn Wyeth at his grandfather's N.C. Wyeth's studio in Chadd’s Ford, Pennsylvania. Working with his aunt, he developed a love for the sensory nature of oil paint—its look, smell, and feel—that has carried through his art. Vividly colored, with open, energetic brushwork, his paintings revel in the physicality of paint and the immediacy of his environment. Qualities that connect his work to artists Robert Henri, George Bellows, and Rockwell Kent, who painted in Maine on Monhegan Island in the early 20th century. In the 1960s, Wyeth purchased a home on Monhegan that had previously been owned by Kent. Since the 1980s, he has spent much of the year painting from his home and studio on Southern Island, offshore of Tenant’s Harbor, where the drama of life on a small island, buffeted by weather, time and tides, and memories of past places and people continue to feed his love affair with paint.
James Browning Wyeth was raised in Chadds Ford Township, Pennsylvania. He has exhibited his work continuously since his first show in New York in 1965. His work became widely known in 1971 after being shown alongside his father's and grandfather’s art in an exhibition at the newly opened Brandywine River Museum in Chadd’s Ford. Since then, his work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad. In 2014, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston presented a major retrospective exhibition of his art. His works are in many private and public collections, including the Brandywine River Museum, the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Terra Museum of American Art, the National Gallery of Art, the National Portrait Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and others. He is a National Academy of Design member and has served on the National Endowment for the Arts Council.

With a long-time career as an art teacher and painter of both 'light' and 'dark', Edward Dufner was one of the first students of the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy to earn an Albright Scholarship to study painting in New York. In Buffalo, he had exchanged odd job work for drawing lessons from architect Charles Sumner. He also earned money as an illustrator of a German-language newspaper, and in 1890 took lessons from George Bridgman at the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy.
In 1893, using his scholarship, Dufner moved to Manhattan and enrolled at the Art Students League where he studied with Henry Siddons Mowbray, figure painter and muralist. He also did illustration work for Life, Harper's and Scribner's magazines.
Five years later, in 1898, Dufner went to Paris where he studied at the Academy Julian with Jean-Paul Laurens and privately with James McNeill Whistler. Verification of this relationship, which has been debated by art scholars, comes from researcher Nancy Turk who located at the Smithsonian Institution two 1927 interviews given by Dufner. Turk wrote that Dufner "talks in detail about Whistler, about how he prepared his canvasas and about numerous pieces he painted. . . A great read, the interview puts to bed" the ongoing confusion about whether or not he studied with Whistler.
During his time in France, Dufner summered in the south at Le Pouleu with artists Richard Emil Miller...

Winold Reiss (1886-1953) was an artist and designer who emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1913. Probably best known as a portraitist, Reiss was a pioneer of modernism and well known for his brilliant work in graphic and interior design. A compassionate man who greatly respected all people as human beings, he believed that his art could help break down racial prejudices. Like his father Fritz Reiss (1857-1915), who was also an artist and who was his son's first teacher, Winold Reiss was artistically moved by diverse cultures. The elder Reiss focused on folk life in Germany while Winold drew substantial inspiration from a range of cultures, particularly Native American, Mexican, and African-American.
As did many young aspiring artists, Winold Reiss studied with the esteemed painter and teacher Franz von Stuck at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, which was at that time a center of the decorative and fine-arts movement. It is not known whether Reiss met E. Martin Hennings...

Philadelphia, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Tenth Annual Philadelphia Watercolor Exhibition, November 10 - December 15, 1912, no. 13.
Painter, teacher and writer, Philip Leslie Hale is recognized for his decorative paintings of the female figure and for his interior scenes with figures as well as for his progressive approach to painting. However, his career went through several phases that included sporting scenes, figural studies of women including nudes, portraits, and allegorical works reflecting the overwhelming forces of nature.
Of the Boston painters of his time, he seemed the most fully committed to Impressionism, and his technique suggests the influence of French impressionist Edgar Degas. In most of his paintings, the landscape was more important than the figure.
He was a prolific writer in local newspapers and periodicals about the contemporary art scene, discussing the work of his Boston colleagues. He also wrote numerous books on art and art history including a study of Vermeer that was published in 1913. Among his writings are 1892 newspaper columns for Arcadia Magazine titled "Letters from Paris", art criticism for the Boston Herald from 1905 to 1909; and art criticism for the Boston Evening Transcript. He argued for the Boston School of Art as led by Edmund Tarbell whose style was based on Impressionism with elements of Realism, especially figure painting.
Hale was born in Boston in 1865, the son Reverend Edward Hale, a Boston clergyman and a relative of Nathan Hale. He studied with Ellen Day Hale, his sister, and Edmund Tarbell at the Boston Museum School, with J. Alden Weir at the Art Students League in New York City, and then went to Paris for further studies at the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He remained in France for fifteen years, returning to America about 1895. During that time, from 1888, he spent summers at Giverny, France with his good friend, artist, Theodore Butler, and became well acquainted with Claude Monet. Traveling throughout Europe, Hale visited the major museums, and copied the works of Ingres, Vermeer, Watteau and Michelangelo.
Hale married Lilian Westcott Hale...

Charles W. Hawthorne (1872-1930) was one of America's most dynamic, penetrating and forthright portrait painters, as well as a creative, inspiring teacher. A painter's painter, Hawthorne ran a summer school in Provincetown - the Cape Cod School of Art - for over thirty years and made it a leading artists' colony of plein-air impressionist-inspired talents. Hawthorne grew up in Richmond, Maine, the son of Joseph Jackson Hawthorne and Cornelia Jane Smith...
