Gordon-Smith, Pillement, Cracovie, 2006, pp. 54-55, fig. 36, ill. Maria Gordon-Smith has confirmed that this painting had adorned the living room of ‘Fuller House’, the residence of the famous Shakesperean Actor ‘David Garrick’. Garrick bought Fuller House in 1755 and had commissioned Robert Adam and Thomas Chippendale to transform the house and decórate it up to date. In 1757 Pillement was introduced to the actor Charles Leviez, he became supporter and promoter of his works in England. According to the Fuller House Inventory, after the death of Garrick, these panels were included as decorated with Chinese paper borders made by Pillement. The present picture was engraved with a few differences in 1759 by Canoe in his collection of scenes from Chinese Pillement. The understated elegance of this striking, decorative work by Jean-Baptiste Pillement commands attention. Delicate and sensitively painted in the style for which Pillement became renowned, this extensive canvas displays a European representation of an idyllic China, a fantastical composition in place of first-hand observation, namely, an excellent example of Chinoiserie. This genre of painting was much admired during the eighteenth century preoccupation with the elaborate beautification of interiors, popular during the Rococo period, in which the art of Chinoiserie quickly found a place and of which style Jean-Baptiste Pillement deftly became a champion. Such canvases were commissioned as wall hangings within illustrious private residences. This painting in particular is known to have graced the rooms of Fuller House, home to David Garrick, the acclaimed eighteenth century Shakespearean actor, in the honour of whom the infamous Garrick Club is named. Jean-Baptiste Pillement’s graceful framing at the painting’s outer edges serves not only a decorative function but as a device with which to draw attention towards the centre of the scene, where we witness an exchange between two adults and a small boy (who has a shaped head from traditional head binding), his hands outstretched as if explanatory, the adults’ attention turned towards him in a rather detached manner as the wooden vessel begins to leave the shore. The charming asymmetrical format, typical of the genre, combined with the curious curling vegetation suggests something of the untamed. The apparent translucence of the water filled areas of this picturesque setting lends a dream-like iridescence to the composition and a subtle humidity exists within the exotic, fertile landscape, even as the figures are fully clothed as accustomed natives. Distinctly non-European architectural structures further distinguish the enchanting Orient from Western civilisation, amidst a palette of soft olive and earthy tones, muted reds and occasional touches of mild, glowing blues.
