Jean-Claude Gaugy is a contemporary French artist known for his painted relief sculptures of Cubist abstractions of figures, landscapes, and still lifes. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Gaugy works within the traditions of early European Modernist painters such as Paul Klee and Georges Braque, referring to his work as "Linear Expressionism." He works in a Contemporary Surrealist style. His work can be found in the collections of the Rockefeller foundation, the Hermitage Museum and the Smithsonian Institute, among others. A classically trained sculptor, He works in carving bas-relief plaques into heavy slabs of wood that could hang on walls like sculpted paintings. Renowned for his distinctive "carved paintings," a unique synthesis of painting and sculpture.Gaugy applies paint with his hands, preferring direct and intimate contact with his work. Deeply emotional, semi-abstract, yet anchored in tradition, Gaugy’s passionate and gestural expressionist works cannot be mistaken for those of any other artist. Born In the Jura mountain region of France, Jean-Claude Gaugy entered the art world early. At age five he began his apprenticeship, drawing daily and working in the family foundry. At fourteen he left for Paris, doing portraits first in cafés and later in an exclusive club. There, Salvador Dali discovered him and sponsored his first Paris gallery exhibition at Galerie de Seine and helped gain him entrance to École des Beaux Arts as a sculpture student. A place in a group show at Paris’ Museum of Modern Art earned him a purchase by the Russian Government of all three of Gaugy’s works in the show, a trip by consular jet to Moscow and St. Petersburg and his first museum installations. Returning to Paris, Gaugy immersed himself in the art world, sharing a studio with Bernard Buffet, meeting Pablo Picasso, continuing to paint and study. He studied at Académie Julien and Académie du Feu in Paris, the School of Design in Rome. School of Woodcarving in Oberammergau, Germany, and School of Sculpture in Moscow. He went to England for an apprenticeship with Henry Moore. In 1996, Gaugy immigrated to the United States where he created major murals for libraries, churches and synagogues, as well as having work purchased by major corporations and well known personalities. He returned to France and had shows in his native region as well as the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris. Jean Claude Gaugy is known for Surreal figure painting, wood carving, sculpture. He has also completed some bronze sculpture in the cubism style as well as some print edition in lithograph technique. He completed many murals, some as long as 50 feet. A variety of museums included his work in their permanent collections and his reputation as the father of Linear Expressionism began to grow. In 1994, the Government of Luxembourg proudly sponsored an exhibit of 150 of Gaugy’s works, including two forty-foot murals. Artists in other media have honored him by writing dance pieces and musical compositions based on his paintings, and in 1998 he had a major mural installed at Columbia Medical Center in New York. In the early 90s, in addition to his regular work, Gaugy began creating his “magnum opus” – a carved work of spiritual themes almost 11,000 square feet in surface area. It has been called “a Sistine Chapel in a contemporary idiom”. Completed in 2002, it was installed as a meditative space in Santa Fe, New Mexico and held open until 2007 to great acclaim. Noted choreographer Christopher Fleming wrote a full-length ballet about this monumental work and performed it in the space to a full house. Based in the Southwest and shown in galleries worldwide.

In the Jura mountain region of France, the Gaugy family have been artists for generations. Jean-Claude Gaugy entered the world and this tradition in 1944. Gaugy immersed himself in the art world, sharing a studio with Bernard Buffet, meeting Picasso, and continuing to paint and study. He studied at Académie Julien and Académie du Feu in Paris, and the School of Design in Rome. School of Woodcarving in Oberammergau, Germany, and the School of Sculpture in Moscow. He went to England for an apprenticeship with Henry Moore, which he describes as “months covered in plaster”. Then a new reality intervened when he was drafted into the French Marines, spending eighteen months in Africa in fierce combat. Gaugy will not talk about this period, but his time spent healing both in a hospital and a monastery indicates how deeply this affected the young and sensitive artist.
In 1996, seeking both greater freedom and artistic stimulation, Gaugy decided to immigrate to the United States. However, upon arrival, he discovered only limited public interest in sculpture. Needing to sculpt, unwilling to paint, he began the development of his signature medium of wall hung paintings carved into wood. Gaugy’s next twenty years were spent exploring the limits of that medium, working realistically, practicing his craft. He generally ignored the conventional art establishment where he created major murals for libraries, churches, and synagogues, as well as having work purchased by major corporations and individuals. Throughout, he persisted in the evolution of his “carved paintings”, ceaselessly fascinated by the challenge of breaking new ground, of moving ancient craft into contemporary art.
At age forty, Gaugy felt that he, his message, and his medium had all developed sufficiently to seek broader recognition. He ceased creating representational imagery; began working in his mature style and commenced gallery representation. He returned to France and had shows in his native region as well as the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris. He completed man murals, some as long as 50 feet, for groups as diverse as the First Interstate Bank Tower in Las Vegas and the National Foundation for Depressive Illnesses, whose 30-foot-long work was unveiled in Washington, D.C., at the National Building Museum in 1991. A variety of museums included his work in their permanent collections and his reputation as the father of Linear Expressionism began to grow.
Headquartered in the Southwest and shown in galleries worldwide, Gaugy daily advances his commitments to his beloved wood and to his continued learning. His technical skill and open heart expand with every caring, and as we watch, the honesty of his work allows us to travel awhile with him on this expressive journey of the human spirit.

Patrick LoCicero was born in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1959. He attended Youngstown State University, Ohio, and the Columbus College of Art and Design. He completed a B.F.A. at Ohio State University in 1982 and an M.F.A. at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1986. His paintings, installations, prints, and multimedia work have been shown in California, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. LoCicero's richly layered imagery is characterized by unusual juxtapositions of everyday objects and classical motifs, which play with the viewer's perception of materials and subjects. LoCicero’s assemblage paintings combine collage with painting. The overlap and collage elements relate directly to the images he depicts, guiding him in his choice of subjects, and come from a variety of sources including the Kama Sutra, antique children’s books, letters and journals. His still life paintings resonate due to the contrast the artist sets up between the collaged surface and the painted surface, as well as the play between the actual shallow space and implied deep space. Patrick specializes in creating mixed-media collages that tell stories. Collage paintings inventively reinterpret the collage technique that developed during the Cubist Dada era, and he reinvigorates one of the most important modes of expression in the art of the 20th Century.

PAINT Abstract Belgian Contemporary Oil Painting Ellen De Meutter Woman Artist
Located in Surfside, FL
Ellen De Meutter
Paint 2, 2007
Acrylic, ink and oil on canvas
31.5 x 23.6 in (80.0 x 59.9 cm)
Provenance: Secrets & Lies show at her American gallery Roberts & Tilton, LA in 2007
Ellen De Meutter (1981) teaches painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp. In 2006-2007 she followed the HISK programme in Ghent, in 2013-2014 she did a residency at the Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht.
De Meutter is represented by Tim Van Laere Gallery since 2006. (they represent Tal R, Marcel Dzama, Tomasz Kowalski and Franz West) Her work has been shown in various exhibitions in Belgium, the United States, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany and Japan. In 2010 she had her first solo museum exhibition in Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens.
Ellen De Meutter alters her viewer's reality by presenting a language in which she classifies the figures, shapes and colors from her personal world into a captivating utopia. Contrary to current trends in Flemish art, De Meutter is not simply relaying an anecdote; she composes unique imagery that allows her to experiment with the placement of the subject and unique treatments of her medium. De Meutter's repertoire of vivid, semi-neon colors contrast the muted grays blacks and grays on which they lay. These seemingly energetic colors are at once enhanced by the dark undertones of the canvas below, while simultaneously insinuating a concealed gravity of subject. Belgian art critic and curator, Luk Lambrecht remarks on De Meutter's painting: "she folds back 'her' world onto itself, into a solid mass of color from which, very slowly, vague contours emerge, which safeguard our expectations about looking at an image." De Meutter's scenes are reminiscent of schoolyard games, incorporating a series of text and symbols. By combing figurative imagery with basic abstraction, Ellen De Meutter creates wildly successful compositions that allude to her comprehensive understanding of contemporary painting. She was included in the show, Tomorrow is a long time: Ellen De Meutter, Gelitin, Kati Heck, Anton Henning, Friedrich Kunath...

Let Her Go - Thickly Painted Impasto Surface Oil Painting with Dream-Like Scene
By Victor Wang
Located in Chicago, IL
Victor Wang's highly textured paintings involve thick layers of paint over collaged images from the Tang Dynasty. In "Let Her Go", the foreground shows a modern female figure sitting upon the side of a boat which gives the impression she is wearing wings and about to take flight. Upon closer look, there are various scenes taking place around her in the water - warriors with knives drawn, a jeep in pursuit of some unseen enemy, a cauldron boiling over. Influence by the Renaissance Masters, Titian and Rembrandt for their glazing and layering techniques respectively, the artist builds the surface using heavy paint, swirling and mixing the color on the canvas. The end result is a poetic and emotionally powerful representation of the human form.

My path through life has been adventurous, exciting, and dream-like. My experience of settling into America in search of better opportunities has been both challenging and inspiring. I use the human face as a vehicle to paint human experiences - worry and wonder, sadness and pleasure - which reflect the emotional stage directly tied to my immigration experiences.
I grew up amongst the sunflower fields in northern China. In my childhood years, I played under the bright, yellow sunflowers with my brothers everyday. China’s Cultural Revolution played an important part in my life. During that time, sunflowers were used as political allegories to depict how citizens of China should follow Mao who represented the sun, since sunflowers follow the sun’s movements. People eventually inferred the deception that this symbol masked. After graduating from high school, I was sent to a labor camp in the country for ‘reeducation’ during China’s Cultural Revolution. There, I was subject to grueling farm work. Often, I worked in corn and sunflower fields from sunrise to sunset. Thus, for me, sunflowers evoke both personal joy and sadness. Therefore, to deliver my complex feelings, I use sunflowers as a metaphor to connote my background and emotional stage.
My incorporation of collages of figures from China’s Tang Dynasty represents my Chinese heritage and is a constant reminder of where I came from. The texture and earthiness on the canvas’s surface are inspired by the texture of the soil on the farm where I worked in China.
Although I often gain great pleasure from the process of painting, it is most important to unfold expressively those feelings within myself.
Wang belongs to a generation of immigrant painters from China, whose artistic background was defined by socialist realism but took advantage of their skills and broke away from that tradition to create new subjects in the U.S.
“When I was a student during Cultural Revolution, Soviet realism art was among the dominant source of influence and it grabbed us like lightening...
