About the Item

"Neige de printemps sur la Dent d’Aire" - Alpes de Haute-Provence - France “Spring snow on the Dent d'Aire - Alpes de Haute-Provence - France Oil on canvas signed lower right, 73 x 100 x 2.5 cm, titled and dated on the back, 1989 Framed with a natural oak floating frame (78 x 105 x 3,5 cm frame included) This artwork depicts a mountain view crowned with lingering spring snow, overlooking a serene Provençal landscape. The contrast between the snow-covered peak and the warm tones of the hills and agricultural land below highlights the seasonal transition from winter to spring. The artist employs a rich palette of cool blues for the mountains and warm ochres for the foreground, creating depth and light. Visible brushstrokes add texture and movement, while the balanced composition places the Dent d’Aire as the central focal point. The piece conveys a sense of calm and grandeur, celebrating the wild beauty of the landscape and the fragility of nature’s cycles. The subtle signature in the bottom right completes this poetic and contemplative work. JEAN THOMAS (1923-2019) Trained at the Lyon Academy of Fine Arts, Jean Thomas began exhibiting his work in 1946. His early paintings, influenced by Modernist masters like Fernand Léger and Henri Matisse, also show the impact of contemporaries such as Bernard Buffet. In his landscapes paintings, Jean Thomas explores light with great precision, achieving near-photographic realism while maintaining a distinct artistic style. Known for his exceptional technical skills, Jean Thomas’s paintings remain in impeccable condition, demonstrating meticulous preparation and execution. He seamlessly blended painting and craftsmanship, creating works of fine detail. Thomas had a rare ability to capture the essence of places, mainly from France but also from New York and Venice to Tahiti and Corsica. His masterful use of light made his paintings deeply immersive. Jean Thomas, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 96, left a lasting legacy in major institutions like the Centre Pompidou and the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris. Throughout his career, his introspective approach allowed him to express what moved him, from portraits to Mediterranean landscapes. His work reflects his deep connection to regions like Provence, Italy, Spain, Tunisia, Sicily, and Corsica, which he saw as endless sources of beauty and inspiration.
