About the Item
Presenting a just discovered original oil painting, "La Maison", by Belgian artist Jessica Rice (1942-2016.)
This painting was just discovered wrapped and stored within the artists personal studio.
"Love Letters", is an original oil on canvas, signed, dated 2001, with an image dimension of 48 x 48 inches, excellent original condition, currently unframed. The detail within this painting is incredible, everyone working on teh family home installing ebony pillars, weaving cane, one cares for a small bird in the tree, and behind all ships coming into the harbor.

Jessica Rice was born in Antwerp, Belgium, which for centuries has been the traditional center of Flemish Masters. Jessica's first oils were painted in Central Africa, where as a young girl she was inspired by the angularity perceived in African art, and by her father's photographs. Her raw talent blossomed in the tropical surroundings. Unfettered by formal training, her images leaned towards cubist-nativism.
Leaving Africa in 1959 for San Francisco, Jessica had already known early success when she sold her work to collectors during and exhibition in Bukavu, Kivu, Africa.
After graduating from the San Francisco Academy of Art in 1964 and awarded the Flax Scholarship, she pursued a career in commercial art in San Francisco and New York, while continuing painting in oils for her personal satisfaction.
Arriving in Los Angeles in the early 1970's, Jessica dedicated herself entirely to painting. The diverse style of early 20th century avant-garde movement, the primitive and lush primary colors reminiscent of her childhood with strong distinctive brush strokes she creates imaginative memories steeped in the traditions of three continents. Her solid figures of heroic dimensions are wrapped in a pervasive nostalgia. Native Flemish landscapes, family gatherings, crowded restaurants, craftsmen and domestic scenes reveal a romanticized version of social realism.

Jessica Rice
Antwerp, Belgium-born artist Jessica Rice was raised in Africa, and after becoming enamored with the folk art around her, taught herself to paint and sold her work locally. An exhibition of Rice’s paintings in Bukava, Kivu, helped establish her not only as an artist worthy of collecting but introduced her rich Cubist-nativist–style works to the art world.
Rice moved to San Francisco in 1959. There she enrolled in the San Francisco Academy of Art. Following her graduation in 1964, Rice worked in commercial art in San Francisco and New York and created oil paintings in her free time. By the early 1970s, she moved to Los Angeles and began painting full-time.
Rice traveled part of each year to her seaside studio in Mexico where she produced many of her Fauvist-Cubist works. Working with oil paints and a palette knife, Rice produced colorful and profoundly expressive landscapes, beach scenes, depictions of Mexico’s street vendors and more. She passed away after a battle with cancer in 2016 in Mazatlán, Mexico.
