About the Item

‘The Baron’s Charger’ by John Frederick Herring Jr. (1815-1907). Academy Fine Paintings is fully conversant with the latest US Government import duties and the legal exemptions under the US Constitution that enable us to ship paintings to America free of reciprocal trade tariffs. Academy Fine Paintings only offers artwork for sale in the finest condition it can be for its age having been professionally cleaned, conserved, and re-varnished. Clients should also note that tracked and signed for international shipping is always complimentary. The painting – which depicts the Cromwellian nobleman with his battle horses and attendant hounds – is signed by the artist and indistinctly dated. It is presented in a fine early-19th century carved and gilded swept frame. The figure is likely to Sir Thomas Fairfax who famously commanded Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army during the English Civil War. Fairfax was known as "the Rider of the White Horse" and for his involvement in the breeding of thoroughbreds horses. John Frederick Herring Jr. was taught by his father, the eminent early 19th century artist J.F. Herring Sr. (1795-1865) who was official Animal Painter to Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent. Like Herring Sr., he became a highly successful painter of sporting and animal subjects which were particularly popular with the English aristocracy. Between 1860 and 1875 J.F. Herring Jr. exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Royal Society of British Artists. Academy Fine Paintings only offers artwork for sale in the finest condition it can be for its age, having been professionally cleaned, conserved, and re-varnished. Fabbriche di Careggine - Mid 19th Century Oil Painting of Tuscany Hills Italy
By Edmund John Niemann
Located in Gerrards Cross, GB
‘Fabbriche di Careggine’ by Edmund John Niemann (1813-1876). Fabbriche di Careggine is the name of a Italian ghost village that today lies beneath Vagli di Sotto, a man-made lake in Tuscany. Prior to its flooding in 1953 the village was home to a community of subsistence farmers who raised sheep and Garfagnana goats. The painting depicts one of these goatherds and a young woman riding out from the village at sunrise. It is not uncommon for paintings by one member of famous family of artists to be mistakenly attributed to a relative; a picture by “the Elder” is erroneously credited as being by “the Younger” and the work of one brother is confused with another, and so on. In 19th century British art...

The first eighteen years of Herring's life were spent in London, where his greatest interests were drawing and horses.[2] In the year 1814, at the age of 18, he moved to Doncaster in the north of England, arriving in time to witness the Duke of Hamilton's "William" win the St. Leger Stakes horserace. By 1815, Herring had married Ann Harris; his sons John Frederick Herring Jr., Charles Herring, and Benjamin Herring were all to become artists, while his two daughters, Ann and Emma, both married painters. When she was barely of age in 1845 Ann married Harrison Weir. In Doncaster, England, Herring was employed as a painter of inn...
