About the Item

Karl Breydel, called The Knight of Antwerp (Antwerp, 1678-1733) Battle scene between Christians and Turks Oil on canvas, 28.5 x 41 cm The painting under consideration, considering the style, composition and subjects depicted, can be attributed to the Antwerp master Karl Breydel (1678-1733). Most of the information on Breydel's life is based on his first biography concerning the Flemish artist's activity compiled by Jean-Baptiste Descamps in the second half of the eighteenth century (La Vie des Peintres Flamands, Allemands et Hollandois, vol. 1, 1764, pp. 190-195): the compilation of a monograph completely devoted to Breydel's pictorial production at such a short distance from his death in 1733 is a testament to the author's enormous critical fortune since the mid-eighteenth century. A pupil first of Pieter Ykens (1648-1695) and then of Pieter Rysbrack (1655-1729) from 1695, he traveled extensively in both Italy and Germany, staying in Frankfurt and Nuremberg, where, on learning of his brother Frans's success, he soon joined him to serve the court of Hasse-Kassel. Here, the two brothers worked together for two years with remarkable success. In 1703 he moved to Amsterdam, joining the city Guild (the city's guild of arts and crafts) and beginning his career as a battler. He, in fact, following in the footsteps of the master Rysbrack and the Brueghels, perceived as ideal mentors in the early stage of his career, had, up to that point, established himself as a landscape painter. Breydel's battalion production is certainly the most distinctive of his particular painting style, which is channeled in the wake of the work of Adam Frans van der Meulen (1632-1690), the leading 17th-century Antwerp battle painter. In addition to the Nuremberg court, from the 1720s onward the artist also worked in Antwerp, his hometown, where he was registered with the Guild of St. Luke, Brussels and Ghent, gaining important recognition. Many paintings by this prolific master are in European museums, including the Royal Museums in Brussels and the National Gallery in London. His battles, usually in a reduced display meter, are rich in characters, with spacious landscape settings, as in the case of the present painting, in which Breydel has combined one of his "classic" battle views with a Rhine landscape, a genre that continued to enjoy great popularity throughout the 18th century.

Knight Van Douw Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17/18th Century Flemish Art Italy
By Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677)
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
After Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677) The stop of a traveler on horseback near a post station Oil painting on canvas 45 x 55 cm In frame cm. 55 x 65 In this pleasant painting, depicting a knight parked near a post station, the Flemish tradition is based on a strong Italianizing sensitivity, especially by observing the setting and its peculiar brightness. The mixture of genres and the particular style of execution make it easy to trace the authorship back to a Nordic author but active in Rome, or strongly influenced by the style in vogue in the Eternal city, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: we are referring, in in particular, to a follower of the Antwerp Simon Johannes van Douw. The chromatic elegance and refinement with which he outlines the figures are typical aspects of his painting. The scene takes place outside a cottage, probably a post office for travelers, where a modest family divides the tasks by assisting the knights. We see a young boy who hands water to the horse before he sets off again, the father is preparing to feed him with straw and the mother who instead takes care of the little son. The Italian reminiscences, evident in our painting, have been absorbed by many Northern European authors such as Nicolaes Berchem, Philips Wouwerman or Johannes Lingelbach, all inspired by the leader Pieter van Laer...
