About the Item
"Kachina Eagle Dancer" - 1939 Serigraph
Serigraph of a Kachina Eagle Dancer by Hopi Pueblo artist Kyrate Tuvahoema (Native American, 1914-1942). The Kachina Eagle Dancer wears a vibrant blue eagle inspired mask, with black and white feathers extending from from the top and back, while three blue feathers stick out from the top of the mask. Elements of an eagle are seen as grey feathers make up wings, as the dancer opens his arms. Vibrant teal and red jewelry are seen on the dancers ankles, wrists and around his neck. The eagle Kachina symbolizes strength and power, and is known as a messenger of the heavens.
Signed "K. Tuvahoema, Hopi 1939"

Kyrate Tuvahoema was a Hopi Pueblo artist. Born in 1914 at Old Oraibe, Arizona.
In the Pueblo cultures, kachina rites are practiced by the Hopi, Hopi-Tewa and Zuni peoples and certain Keresan tribes, as well as in most Pueblo tribes in New Mexico.
The kachina concept has three different aspects: the supernatural being, the kachina dancers, and kachina dolls.
Kyrate Tuvahoema was a Hopi Pueblo artist, he was a student at Indian schools at the Santa Fe Hopi Pueblo, as well as in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was well known for his depictions of Katsinas that were "tall and lean, but with good detail and color in costume, mask, and paraphernalia".
Shortly after finishing school he contracted Tuberculosis and was in and out of different sanitoriums until his very premature death in 1942, at the age of 28.
