Lars Englund
Composition with Head

1956

About the Item

A vibrant composition or portrait in a constructivist style by artist Lars Englund (born 1933), signed and dated "LED 56" (1956). This is an early work by the artist in which he has created a colorful portrait or figure by using pastel and chalk in various colors such as red, orange, blue, and green. Englund's paintings on paper are relatively rare, as he primarily worked with sculpture and other mixed media forms. John Lars-Olov Englund was born in 1933, in Stockholm, Sweden. He received his artistic education under the guidance of Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen from 1950 to 1951 and later at Fernand Léger's school in Paris. Englund held his first exhibition at Lilla Paviljongen in Stockholm in 1953. Throughout his career, he has been recognized as one of Sweden's most significant and influential artists. Englund has experimented with various materials, including plastic, steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber, creating non-figurative works that often explore simple geometric forms like spheres and circles. These elements are combined into organic objects, reflecting his motto "Pars pro toto" (the part for the whole). In 1993, he was awarded the Prince Eugen Medal for sculpture. Englund has had several notable exhibitions, including a major retrospective at Moderna Museet, (Modern Museum of Art), in Stockholm in 2005. He has also showcased his work internationally, with exhibitions in Venice, Warsaw, New York, and most recently in 2021 at the Centre Pompidou in Paris as part of the "Aerodream" exhibition. Englund's work is characterized by his use of industrial materials and his exploration of the relationship between the artwork and its surrounding space. His creations often blur the lines between sculpture and architecture, with influences from minimalism and constructivism. Despite these associations, his work maintains a unique identity, with forms that can evoke both the flowing aesthetics of baroque art and the precision of geometric abstraction. As of 2023, Englund continues to live and work in Jonstorp, Skåne, Sweden. His contributions to art have been celebrated in various exhibitions and installations, solidifying his status as a pivotal figure in contemporary Swedish art.

Daniela Gullotta, Abandoned Church, Urbex, 100x150cm, 2020
Located in Milano, MI
Urbex is the English acronym for urban exploration and is an activity that consists of searching for and locating abandoned infrastructure with the goal of visiting, photographing and conveying its contents, with particular involvement of methodologies from geography, anthropology, sociology to cultural studies. Her works have been in the past approached to the works of Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) and Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1770), but in Gullotta's paintings the absence of color makes the spaces particularly ethereal, allowing them to be ideally lifted to new places and to new life. An artist of international caliber who has decided to entrust her return to her homeland to Almach Art Gallery in Milan, while maintaining connections with important galleries, such as Marlborough Fine Art in London and Galerie Koch in Hanover. The artwork represents an ideal abandoned church...
