About the Item
Early 20th Century French gouache and watercolour on paper of a fisherman by Louis Henri Magnat, The painting is signed bottom right and presented in a carved and gilt wood frame under glass.
A charming and amusing view of a man fishing with a pole, a young child next to him looking down at a frog in the water. Magnat has created a wonderfully humorous and colourful scene. The position of the fisherman crouched on the quayside making him the same height as the child whose hands are firmly in his pockets. Another figure in a yellow cap can be seen laying down on the right waiting for the fish to leave the water. Magnat has used jewel like colours and his technique makes the painting sing.

A Fishing Boat at Sea, Late Mid-Century Gouache on Paper

French gouache on paper of a boat travelling the seas. The work is unsigned but dated 22/11/70. Presented in simple gilt frame with handcut mount.
A really engaging and powerful painting. The artist has managed to capture the swell of the sea, the movement of the boat listing gently to one side, the slightly rusty hull, the moody sky filled with all the seagulls following behind, which suggests it might be a fishing boat. They have used a limited but strong colour palette, blues, blacks and greys and then just to highlight and catch the eye a splash of green to represent the starboard or right bow light.
