About the Item

Very well executed original oil on canvas painting by the French artist, Luc Cossier Dit Walles of the the Place de Furstenburg in Paris, France. Signed lower right. Titled and signed verso with the artists’ stamp versoas well. For exhibition history see last photo. Most of the painting is done with a small palette knife. Condition is excellent, no restorations. Circa 1985. Custom white gold with white linen liner frame in excellent condition. Overall framed measurements are 22 by 25.75 inches. Provenance: A Sarasota, Florida collector. Place de Furstenberg is labeled as being one of the most picturesque squares in Paris, Place de Furstenberg can be found in the heart of the affluent 6th arrondissement, tucked in among the web of streets found between Boulevard Saint-Germain and the left bank of the Seine. The “place” is in reality a road, but the way that the surrounding buildings are placed around the central island, form a kind of courtyard, hence its title. The Haussmannian architecture that defines Paris is particularly noticeable both here and in the surrounding roads, adding to the romantic and unequivocally Parisian charm. Place de Furstenberg sits in what used to be the first Saint-Germain-des-Prés Abbey, built in the 6th century by Childebert I. The history of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés Abbey is a complex one. After its initial construction, the Abbey owned most of the land that we know as the Saint Germain area, up until the very late 17th century. The monasterial complex spanned the entire area, but the buildings were forever being destroyed and re-built. It was only after the Revolution that the Abbey was changed into a gunpowder warehouse, after which most of the monastic buildings were destroyed, with very few remains today. Luc Cossier dit Walles (b. 1946) Luc Cossier, known as Walles, is a painter of French nationality born on January 2, 1946 in Poland to French parents. He received a Master’s degree from Académie des Beaux Arts in Kraków (Cracow). The artist spent much of his childhood in Poland surrounded by Byzantine influences in the churches and monuments. His paintings therefore have a mosaic-like quality to the surface, achieved by using small palette knives to form tiny squares and triangles, as well as a jewel-toned palette. Walles lives and works in the Paris area where he exhibits regularly. He paints primarily in Paris, but also paints the coastal destinations of France. His pseudonym derives from part of his Polish name.
