About the Item
"Terra Rosa Nude" by Mark Bradley Schwartz is an original oil on canvas depicting the nude back of a female model with with graceful curves.
A native of Illinois, He began his professional life as a graphic designer and art director in St. Louis, Missouri and later moved to Southern California to further his design career. Although Schwartz’s career was successful, he wanted to pursue work of a more personally fulfilling nature.
To reach these new goals Schwartz first attended life drawing classes at Associates in Art, in Sherman Oaks, California. He later studied at the California Art Institute in Westlake Village, California, where he received extensive training in drawing and painting the human figure from life. While studying with famed illustrator Glen Orbik, he was exposed to a new way of seeing in terms of shape, value and edge. After two years of study at the California Art Institute, he was invited to become an instructor and taught there until the school closed in late 2014.
Mr. Schwartz has a great appreciation for realist artwork. He likes the challenge of combining accurate drawing and expressive brushwork. He has studied and been influenced by painters from John Singer Sargent, to Anders Zorn, to Nicolai Fechin. Their influence on his work can be seen ranging from subtle color harmonies to a variety of thick and thin paint application.
If one asks Schwartz what his favorite subjects are, he replies “figure and still life.” He qualifies this by saying no matter what the subject is, all paintings are really about laying down shapes of color with a variety of edges. Everything can be broken down into these elements. Large shape vs. small shape, light shape vs. dark shape, hard edge vs. soft edge.

Mark Bradley Schwartz
Mark Bradley Schwartz is a contemporary American realist painter who specializes in figurative works and still lifes. Originally from Illinois, he transitioned from a successful career in graphic design and art direction to fine art, seeking greater personal fulfillment through creative expression. Schwartz received his formal training at the California Art Institute under illustrator Glen Orbik, whose teachings on shape, value, and edge significantly influenced his artistic development. His technical approach balances accurate drawing with expressive brushwork, drawing inspiration from masters like John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, and Nicolai Fechin. Bindewald was born in Charlottenburg. He moved to Berlin in 1914 where he studied till 1924 at the Berliner Kunst Akademie. Bindewald travelled in Europe, but mainly stayed in Germany and certainly never was in China. This painting was made in Europe, presumably in the China Town of Berlin. Bindewald received several commisions in Germany from factory owners who wanted their factories painted inside, usually with workers, as well as outside. In the present painting the sitter on the right seems to be a man with a Manchurian background, wearing the brown coat reserved for the highest aristocracy in China.
In China the black sleeve-ends completely cover the hands, indicating that the high aristocracy does not have to do any manuel labour. This man clearly is not a factory worker but he possibly is the (co)- owner of the factory in the background and as such might need his hands to do at least some writing.
