Natasha Wright
"STREET OPHELIA", Painting, Oil on Canvas, Nude Woman on Cream, Black Line, Rose

2019

About the Item

Natasha Wright's art probes the politics of representation of the female form. Gender, sexuality, vulnerability and power, seduction and aggression - these dualities motivate the dynamics of her work. The painting "STREET OPHELIA", in oil paint on canvas, is a supreme example – erotic and brutally elegant, the cream and rose and tan paint is both background and body, while the black outline of the upside-down nude woman cuts through the entire field. Measuring 60x48" in size, it's an unmistakable statement of desire and dislocation. From Natasha Wright – "The paintings reference the political and the personal. The representation of females throughout history is considered alongside contemporary references. The Venus of Willendorf, Mary Magdalena, The Three Graces and Cardi B are some of my many muses." "STREET OPHELIA" was shown recently at Fresh Paint, a group show at Art of Our Century Gallery in Greenwich Village, New York, from February 27 to March 22, 2020. In May 2017 Natasha earned her Masters of Fine Arts, (Painting) from The New York Studio School. She was awarded The New York Studio School Scholarship, The Jane Chace Carroll Merit Award and the LCU Award. In 2017 she co-founded JMN Artists, a curatorial collaboration and artists’ initiative. Natasha has exhibited in New Zealand, Australia and The United States. Her work has been included in publications such as Harpers Bazaar, Art Critical, The New Zealand Artist Magazine, The Denizen and The New Zealand Herald. Natasha's work is also held in private collections in Australia, New Zealand, The United Kingdom and The United States.

"SORCERER'S BISCUIT", painting, surrealist dream, wolf, queen, duality, magic
By Tony Geiger
Located in Toronto, Ontario
SORCERER'S BISCUIT is a new oil on canvas surrealist painting by Brooklyn, New York artist Tony Geiger. It measures 16x20" and is a unique artwork. Note the artist's vocabulary present here – the young girl in early 20th century clothes holding the chewed biscuit; on poles either side of her what looks like a wolf in top hat, and a queen with crown. The wolf and queen are dimensional though appear as garish silhouettes – setting up a duality, a dream, a magic spell... Tony Geiger has said his paintings take you to a certain place, but you have to find your own way back. The world he creates encompasses both classical surrealism and more contemporary concerns. Conflict is usually present. These mischievous juxtapositions make statements on the human condition – either politically, physically or spiritually. Geiger wants the viewer to be challenged and amused by this mixture of the macabre and the playful. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts, New York and a longtime NYC resident, Tony Geiger still considers himself a transplanted Californian. He has exhibited paintings at the Sideshow Gallery in Williamsburg, the Barbican Centre in London, England, Miami Projects at Art Basel, Ceres Gallery in Chelsea, NYC, and he was accepted into The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program. Tony Geiger lives in Carroll...
