About the Item
Nazzareno Cipriani (Rome, 1843 - 1925)
In the gondola
Watercolor on paper, 102.7 x 66.5 cm
Signed lower left: N. Cipriani
A descendant of a Venetian family settled in the first quarter of the 19th century near the Eternal City, Nazzareno Cipriani studied in Rome and worked in the Lazio studio of the Neapolitan painter Achille Vertunni, alongside Pietro Barucci and Pio Joris, figures who markedly influenced the elaborate process of consolidating his rich visual imagery: in the 1960s, the period within which his training took place, he devoted himself mainly to paintings of a historical or religious nature, in line with established 19th-century Romantic trends. Having reached artistic maturity, Cipriani favored depictions of landscapes, both of his homeland, Veneto, and of his adopted homeland, Lazio. His Venetian views are generally caught in the gray glow of an expectation of rain: backlit gondolas-dark and lonely elements-perfectly connote the place, creating a timeless and suspended atmosphere with almost mystical and spiritual traits. In his acclaimed Roman landscapes, on the other hand, scenes appear populated by vernacular characters in typical costume and illuminated by a garish light that instills serenity. Beginning in the 1870s-a period in which the painter continually attended national and international exhibitions, including the Roman Exhibition of Amateurs and Connoisseurs and the Exhibition of Fine Arts in Vienna, often being affiliated with members of Costa and Santorio's In arte libertas group-Cipriani, fascinated by Fortuny's splendid paintings, became passionate about the technique of watercolor, of which he became an excellent master; in 1875 he was among the ten founders of the Association of Roman Watercolorists, with whom he participated in exhibitions until 1913. His splendid watercolor works were presented at the National Exhibition in Rome in 1883 (The Bride's Farewell), at the Royal Academy in London, and at the Roman Academy of San Luca.
The present painting by Cipriani depicts a Venetian scene, with a gondola plying the calm waters of the lagoon at sunset. A gondolier propels the boat, within whose hull two lovers exchange confidences, on the placid waters with iridescent reflections of the Venetian lagoon: the use of the watercolor technique allows the play of light on the water mirror to be rendered to perfection, making this marvelous Venetian view unique.
