About the Item

This interesting figurative landscape oil painting is by British artist Norman Toll. He liked to paint well populated scenes with an event or activity as the focus. Painted circa 1955, the composition is a busy London construction site with numerous workmen and on lookers in the foreground. Beyond, on the scaffolding of a building reads Steelwork by Robinson. A red London bus is in the background. A colourful active scene and an excellent example of Toll's work. Provenance. Cardiff estate. Condition. Oil on canvas, 36 inches by 28 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a complementary frame, 43 inches by 35 inches and in good condition. Norman Toll (1932-2014). Formerly Art teacher at Oriel High School and East Norfolk Sixth Form College. As well as teaching Toll continued to pursue his passion as an artist. Toll produced oil paintings of the Great Yarmouth area, often crowded figurative scenes such as Britiannia Pier and the Marching Band. He died aged 82.

Richmond Bridge London Landscape - British 1970's art cityscape oil painting
Located in London, GB
This lovely city landscape oil painting is by noted British artist Dennis Gilbert. Painted in 1970 from an elevated perspective, the composition is of Richmond Bridge, spanning the River Thames. The large building on the right of the bridge in the foreground is now the Pitcher and Piano pub. Numerous figures can be seen going about their daily lives in the sunshine. Beyond that the Thames flows under the bridge with several boats and rowers and a surprisingly green and tree populated London sprawls on in the background. This is a charming detailed painting of a grand old bridge and its surrounding making London look very appealing. Richmond Bridge is an 18th-century stone arch bridge that crosses the River Thames at Richmond, connecting the two halves of the present-day London Borough of Richmond upon Thames...

London Costmongers, Urban 20th Century English Oil
Located in London, GB
Attributed to Mary Adshead 1904 - 1995 London Costmongers Oil on canvas Image size: 30 x 36 inches Framed Costermongers were London people that sold fruit and veg and other ‘perishables’ from barrows. Often wheeling and then stationing their barrow on the street, so their customers could easily come and buy from them. Costermongers were fiercely independent, rebellious in their dress and outlook, and had little time for ‘middle class moralising’ and attempts to suppress or restrict their way of life. (Much like modern teenagers) The men depicted stop work for a break with cups of tea and a few read the newspapers. Next to the man with the yellow apron can be seen some cakes on a plate. A work place , a factory can be seen in the distance on the right. It is possible that the painting depicts a cabmen's shelter, as some did serve outside and many still survive today in London. The style of the painting is very much that of a student of the Slade School in London and has similarities with other artists work such as James Batemen or Herbert Ashwin Budd. On the back of the painting it has in chalk the name 'Rhoades', which could refer to the artist Geoffrey Hamilton Rhoades...
