In the lively artistic scene of 18th-century Rome, dominated by big names and far-reaching aesthetic trends, emerges the figure of Paolo Monaldi, a painter whose art offers a valuable and fascinating insight into the daily life of the time. His canvases, populated by humble characters and set in recognizable scenes of the Roman countryside or the most picturesque corners of the city, deliver a vivid and forthright image and an extremely valuable document for reconstructing the dictates of a world that would otherwise have been swallowed up by oblivion. Biographical information on Paul Monaldi is, unfortunately, fragmentary and not always detailed. It is known that he was active in Rome in the 18th century, but the precise dates of his birth and death are still debated among scholars. References with respect to his training also appear very limited: he is believed to have trained with Andrea Locatelli but no documents are available to support this thesis, first postulated by Abbot Lanzi. Despite this shortcoming, his artistic output speaks volumes, revealing a painter of remarkable technical skill and observational sensitivity. Monaldi devoted himself mainly to genre painting, or "bambocciate," an artistic current that found great fortune in Rome beginning in the seventeenth century, thanks mainly to the influence of Nordic painters operating at the Eternal City. The so-called "Bamboccianti," because of their apparently crude style and preference for popular subjects, contrasted with academic historical and religious painting, choosing to depict scenes of common life, markets, taverns, folk festivals, brigands and wayfarers. Monaldi fits fully into this tradition, but with a personal touch that sets him apart. What is striking about Monaldi is his ability to capture the essence of his subjects: the figures, while often falling into recurring types-the peasant, the laundress, the wayfarer, the musician-never appear stereotypical. On the contrary, they are rendered with a verve and vitality that suggest a deep knowledge of and empathy for ordinary people. Their faces, their gestures, their clothes, often threadbare but rendered with great attention to detail, tell us silent stories of toil, of cheerfulness, of everyday life. The settings are equally significant. Monaldi prefers open landscapes, often with ancient ruins in the background, or glimpses of city life that evoke the Rome of his time. The light in his canvases is usually bright and diffuse, helping to create a serene and at times idyllic atmosphere, even when the subjects are related to situations of poverty or marginality. It is a light that enhances the earthy colors, the bright reds of the cloths, the greens of the fields, and gives a sense of authenticity to the scenes. Among the most recurrent subjects in his works are market scenes, with stalls filled with fruits and vegetables, and figures intent on bargaining or simply observing. Equally famous are his depictions of taverns and dive bars, where patrons of all kinds gather to drink, eat, and socialize, often accompanied by traveling musicians. There is no shortage of scenes of rural life, with shepherds and animals, or moments of rest along the roads leading to Rome. Despite his clear affiliation with the bambocciata genre, Monaldi's art also displays a certain compositional elegance and attention to detail that bring him closer to more "academic" painters. His palette is rich and varied, and his brushwork, while maintaining a freshness typical of the genre, reveals an experienced and confident hand. Paolo Monaldi was a painter who was able to observe and narrate the world around him with honesty and sensitivity: his works constitute an invaluable heritage for understanding the life, customs and traditions of 18th-century Rome. They remind us that art is not only a celebration of great events or illustrious figures, but can also be a powerful means of immortalizing the beauty and dignity of everyday life, even that of the humblest people. Among Monaldi's finest works is the painting depicting the Aquiline Horse, formerly in the Rospigliosi collection, now in the Museum of Rome at Palazzo Braschi, which in addition to the author's initials bears the date 1757. Beyond the numerous paintings with peasant scenes set in the Agro and passed through the Italian and international antiques market, mention should be made of the ovals depicting Visit to the Farm at the Musée des beaux-arts in Bordeaux and the Peasants' Dance at the Musée d'art et d'archéologie in Périgueux. The artist's best-known cycle, however, remains the one created between 1766 and 1771 for Cardinal Flavio Chigi's suburban villa, partly executed in collaboration with Paolo Anesi.
Our painting represents an interesting testimony to Monaldi's bamboozling production: indeed, all the distinctive features of the painter's output can be read in it. Standing out in the canvas are the rough realism, devoid of pietism, of the depiction of the popular figures and the choice of a serene and reassuring palette, distinctive of the Roman painter's corpus.
