About the Item
Famed American Illustrator Paul Davis of 1968 Che Guevara poster fame illustrates an article about Whisky from Ireland, Scotland, Canada, and the United States. He executes the work in a folk art style in relief sculpture. The four bottles are hand-carved and nailed to a wood board framed in a bespoke frame. Instead of the distillery label being on the front of the bottle, Davis paints a portrait of an Irishman, a Canadian, a Scotsman and an American to symbolize the whisky's country of origin. To say the least, this is a deceptively brilliant and unexpected work that is part relief sculpture and part painting. Signed lower right.
The artwork appeared on pages in Playboy Magazine May 1965 and was done on assignment, It illustrated an article on whisky by Thomas Mario titled "Proofs Positive," with the caption "A spirited tribute to the whiskies and whiskeys of Ireland, Scotland, Canada, and the United States."
