About the Item

The Pin-Up of ravishing young beauties in mid-century America was a widely popular art form. The assumption that Pin-Up art was the exclusive domain of men is a misnomer. Female illustrators/artists flushed at the turn of the century, and towards mid-century, a few did Pin-Ups as well. Along with Joyce Ballantyne, and Zoë Mozert, Pearl Frush was a member of the select "Girl's Club". This work of a smiling brunette poised to snap the viewers photo is a great example of Frush's work and was published in Gerlach-Barklow calendar and appears as figure 464. It also appeared in The Great American Pin-Up by Charles G. Martignette and Louis K. Meisel (Taschen, 1996). Look This Way and Smile, Playtime series, circa 1945 Signed lower right Provenance: Louis and Susan Meisel Collection Framed size 26.75 x 22

Woman in a Red Dress, Mid Century Female Illustrator/ Artist, Elizabeth Taylor ?
By Gladys Rockmore Davis
Located in Miami, FL
Mid-century female illustrator/artist Gladys Rockmore Davis paints a compelling portrait of a contemplative beauty who looks like Elizabeth Taylor. Frontal and lateral forces work together in this pyramidal composition. The sitter stares down at the viewer creating a frontal tension. Her hypnotic gaze is counterbalanced by the lateral movement of her crossed hands and triggers an emotional response. Gladys Rockmore Davis is both a work-for-hire illustrator and a fine artist- She was an illustrator for clients such as Upjohn, Munsingwear, Elgin Watches, and Johnson & Johnson. Davis had a show at the prestigious Midtown Gallery and Babcock Gallery in New York. She studied at the California School of Fine Arts, Art Institute of Chicago, and Art Students League. William R. 1950s Girly Pin-Up Hangs out on Miami Beach in the 1970s
By Robert Funk
Located in Miami, FL
Besides being a pioneering staged photograph, the composition is unique as well. A five-inch cutout appears to be monumental. The subject fills the pictorial space from the bottom to the top. It dominates the vast beachscape and dwarfs the life-size figures to the lower right. By photographing a reproduction of a person on paper, Funk pushes the boundaries of portraiture in 1977. Robert Funk is a pioneer of Staged Photography. The work is signed, numbered 3/15, dated, and titled lr. printed later, unframed, Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper Robert Funk is a pioneer of toy, doll, miniature, plastic thingies and staged photography. He also photographs his own paintings. Most of his work is done on location. He does not use photoshop to strip in images. Billy DeVorss (1908 – 1985) was a self-taught illustration artist who started his commercial career in 1933. He was well known throughout his career for the voluptuous figures and attractive faces of his images. This poster is one of those great pin-up style images created by DeVorss. Alone among the pin-up artists in being entirely self-taught, Billy De Vorss sold his first three published pin-ups to the Louis F. Dow Calendar Company in St. Paul in about 1933. Until that time, he had been working as a teller in a bank in St. Joseph, Missouri. There, he met the stunning woman Glenna, who became his wife and first official model.
