About the Item

Pierre Dorion (Canadian, b. 1959) Pontoise, 1989 Oil and mixed media on canvas 47 3/4 x 36 in. Framed: 56 x 43 3/4 x 2 1/4 in. Signed, dated, and inscribed verso Jack Shainman Gallery label verso From the very beginning of his career, Pierre Dorion has had a strong interest in art history, and he attracted early critical attention with installation work that took an analytical look at the styles and subject matter of classical painting. Then, after producing a series of large-scale self-portraits in the 1990s, his gaze turned to architectural and other manufactured spaces, and gradually he developed a more graphic style of working that resulted in his paintings becoming increasingly spare, ultimately achieving a kind of figurative Minimalism. Unmediated by inflection and painterly gesture, Dorion’s depiction of the specific locations selected and framed in his initial photographs confound the viewer’s sense of scale and perspective. Through his careful use of close detail and flat viewpoints, the walls, corners and features (such as doors, windows, ledges) of his ‘scenes’ become pure fields of line, colour and shading: the formal elements of Abstraction. Another important and enduring aspect of Dorion’s practice is his interest in the way that paintings occupy space—both the architectural space of where they are located, and the personal space of the viewer. Rather than presenting a chronological unfolding of the thirty works in this exhibition, from 1994 to 2012, the installation strategy echoes the works’ compositions, and emphasizes the relationships between the paintings’ subject matter and the context in which we see them. Pierre Dorion was born in Ottawa in 1959. He lives and works in Montréal. Since graduating from the University of Ottawa in 1981, he has exhibited regularly in Montréal and New York, as well as across Canada and Europe.

Signed lower left: Bilson Bilson was born in Reykjavik, Iceland. At the age of five he moved to London, England, speaking Icelandic rather more fluently than English. He realised that nobody was listening and started to paint. His unique talent was first noticed a year later, when, at the age of six, he won an international Exhibition of Children’s Art competition in Prague, Czechoslovakia. At the age of nineteen he became a full-time professional: self-taught, self-propelled and completely self-supported. He has painted ever since. Bilson has lived in various countries including Australia, Hong Kong, USA, Canada, Ireland and now resides happily in Iceland. There continues to be a great deal of travelling and painting on the move, as well as continuing to exhibit worldwide. Many of Bilson’s paintings are owned by well-known people and corporations, such as Bob Hawke – former Prime Minister of Australia, Jonathon Sachs – The Chief Rabbi, Clint Eastwood, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Anne Robinson, The Von Thyssen Collection, The Romanov Collection, Westinghouse, Ashland Oil and Arrowfield Horse Stud...

Displacement - 21st Century, Contemporary, Figurative Painting, Oil
By Scott Naismith
Located in Barcelona, Catalonia
"My recent work now becomes more involved with cloud cover and its effect on light and colour through both its translucent and opaque properties. Clouds are visible masses of water droplets or frozen ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. They have the ability to refract and reflect, creating an ever changing perception of light which inspires my use of colour. I am constantly referring to the paradox of a cloud’s perceived weight and its fragility and the relationship between the cool and warm colours created by it. I have become increasingly interested in catching the moment when heavy overcast clears to reveal clear blue sky, a cool colour that complements the warmth it brings. While the most obvious manifestation of light refraction at this time would occur in the form of a rainbow, I will be concerned with accentuating the infinite, more subtle effects. I find myself inspired increasingly by the works of Turner, who created ephemeral atmospheric effects using large washes of liquid paint. Other influences include Henry Matisse, Francis Cadell, Glasgow boys: Guthrie Lavery, Henry... and Joan Eardley...
