Acrylic & Watercolour on Paper
Prasanta’s inventiveness in his works lies as much in the selection and juxtaposing of the images as in its technical manipulations. He takes imagery from daily life and puts it together in another context.
Style : Commingling pictures and text, Sahu borrows motifs from the mass media. The black and white photographic images adopt a documentary style of address, presenting a snippet of everyday reality, such as we would be likely to find in a newspaper or magazine clipping. Yet, in Sahu's oeuvre, this process of citation operates on multiple levels.
The artist is intensely aware of the pictorial surface of the canvas. Monochromatic pictures are contrasted with vividly painted areas and abrasions on the canvas form interesting textural motifs. However, in his work Sahu moves away from the high-modernist obsession with the formal properties of the painted surface. The paintings operate as performative gestures connecting the realms of art and society.
For example, if Sahu draws attention to the materiality of the canvas through deliberately disfiguring its surfaces, the technique also highlights the symbolic importance of the image thus blemished. Violence is enacted on the pictorial surface, so that art is no longer the terrain of isolated intellectual pleasure, it becomes part and parcel of our social and political environment: both implicated in its aggression and a place for critique.
As such, Sahu's painting functions as social commentary. Acutely conscious of the inherent conflicts in the urban condition, his works draw ironic, sometimes poignant, attention to its underlying brutality and cloaked hypocrisies. The crowd forms a familiar theme in his canvases. Through the depiction of its seething mass of faces, the artist analyses common human sentiments and the complicated relation between individual consciousness and collective deeds.

Joydip Sengupta - The Recluse - 22 x 17.5 inches (unframed size)
Watercolor and Acrylic on paper.
Style : His artistic devices are drawn from a range of sources, such as Kalighat paintings and ancient philosophical texts. Of course, his concerns are very much contemporary like the impact of globalization leading to economic marginalization and cultural degradation.
His photo realistic works draw from images related to contemporary Indian life, building complex puzzles and weaving together myriad experiences and influences as imbibed by the artist. The motifs in his paintings are rather complex.
According to his “I primarily work on Paper and Canvas. My chosen mediums of expression are Watercolour, Gouache, Acrylic and Oil paints. I am also engaged in photography, filmmaking, sculpture and installations.”
Conceptually, the immediacy of the drawn image alongside elaboration of the painted surface; balance the overall process of image making with anecdotes and mystery motifs. The interlocking of juxtaposed drawings with the painted surface steadily blurs the certainty of the known from the unknown. An altered sense of reality emerges. The human psyche perceives to the extent of what it may see and beyond that spectrum is the unknown, which is an anxious state of being. The notion of the self within a contained form is bound by the limits of time and to embrace its fleeting nature is a challenge. We are able to justify the presence of reality by assigning identities to it and a strong sense of the self is built around them. From within the illusions of a complex network, we are often reminded that life is fleeting. The surplus and grandeur of modern culture shifts your attention to make-believe realities where the nature of the self is packaged in everlasting youthfulness and happy living.

"Untitled" Oil on Paper - Figurative Drawing
Located in Houston, TX
This minimalist painting on paper is part of a series, which references a mantra of Bhatt’s, “life is a circus.” Floating in space, the characters portrayed in this work play out their roles, while remaining unaware of the full scope of their surroundings.
Amita Bhatt received her BFA from the Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara, India and her MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, Maryland. Bhatt’s work has been exhibited at noteworthy venues such as the Bluestar Contemporary Art Center, Walters Art Museum, The Station Museum of Contemporary Art, and The Project Row Houses, all in the United States as well as Museo Pedro de Osma in Peru. She has also been the recipient of several prestigious awards and recently served as a Grant Panelist on the National Endowment for the Arts. Her works are included in many important private and public collections.
Bhatt digs deep into world philosophies and mythologies to answer questions pertaining to our political as well as personal belief systems. Unafraid to explore uncomfortable territories, the artist mines from a range of sources to create hybrid creatures that are often symbolic of man’s psychological condition in an angst-ridden zeitgeist.
In exploring issues of identity and violence, Bhatt’s research led her to the beginnings of mankind. Most ancient creation...
