About the Item

Late 18th or early 19th century oil on canvas Rococo idylic pastoral scene. Though not signed the painting is of very fine quality and is presented in a plain gilt wood frame. This charming pastoral scene depicts a young boy and girl in a rustic countryside setting. The boy, donning a blue jacket and straw hat, energetically gestures toward the distance and his fine animals, a pair of oxen and some sheep, while the girl, clad in traditional peasant attire, gazes up at him with curiosity. She holds a stick, seated beside a rustic wooden fence and bales of hay, as she strokes her dog evoking the simplicity of rural life. There is great depth to the composition and all the details including the overhanging tree are beautifully rendered. The soft, muted colours and delicate brushstrokes enhance the tranquil, idyllic atmosphere, capturing a moment of innocence and wonder. This artwork beautifully combines elements of nature and human interaction, emphasizing the harmonious connection between people and their pastoral surroundings. The painting of the cows is very reminiscent of the work of Saverio della Gatta and his painting 'Return from the feast at Montevergine' from 1826 Saverio della Gatta (Lecce, 8 September 1758 – ..., shortly after 1828) was an Italian painter, known in particular for his landscapes and views of Naples and its surroundings. Saverio della Gatta, sometimes signed Xavier in his paintings, was a Neapolitan painter active between the eighteenth century and the first decades of the nineteenth century. He portrayed landscapes and views with typical aspects of Neapolitan life of the time. His usual medium was watercolour and gouache. He was a pupil of Jacopo Cestaro in 1777 at the Academy of Drawing in Naples and His first documented work is a view of Vesuvius dated 1779. At the request of the King of Naples, he was commissioned in December 1782 to make a trip to the kingdom to make portraits of the costumes of the different provinces to be reproduced in a porcelain service of the Royal Factory of Naples. A watercolour from 1794 documents his stay in Rome. There are no documented works dated after 1828. The composition and subject of this painting is also reminiscent of the paintings of Boucher, Watteau and Fragonard. The delicate brushstrokes of Rococo artists transformed 18th-century European art with their light-hearted elegance and whimsical charm. Emerging as a reaction to the heavy grandeur of baroque formality, these painters embraced asymmetrical designs and pastel palettes to create intimate portraits and frivolous scenes that captured aristocratic life. François Boucher, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and Antoine Watteau stand as the movement’s defining figures, each developing distinctive techniques while working within the Rococo’s playful framework. Their mythological subjects and love scenes adorned the opulent interiors of French palaces during Louis XV’s reign. This artistic revolution wasn’t limited to France. Artists like Giovanni Battista Tiepolo brought theatrical compositions to Italy, while Thomas Gainsborough adapted the style’s refined sensibility for English audiences.
