This contemporary surrealistic oil painting is by Toni Hamel.
When Toni Hamel begins a new painting, she often refers to an earlier sketch she made. It’s part of the process that enables her to unleash her imagination and create fantastical imagery as part of ‘another world.’ Hamel’s surrealistic work is rooted in storytelling—universal stories that often evolve around a ‘discourse on human behaviour.’
In this piece, rendered in a serene blue palette, a man is seen standing on the earth in front of an easel, his paintbrush touching the canvas. He is looking towards the night sky that is filled with stars—one shooting star catches the viewer’s eye.
“Sometimes it's difficult, if not impossible, for me to clearly render the particular vision I may have in my mind. This painting might then be considered a metaphor for the difficulty I face as I try to jot down on paper a fleeting idea, especially one that disappears as soon as it is conceived. Toni Hamel was born in Italy in 1961. In the early 1980s, she acquired a BFA from the Accademia di Belle Arti of Lecce in Italy. Upon arriving in Canada, she furthered her studies and attained a post-graduate Certificate in Computer Graphics from Sheridan College (Canada, 1991).
The recipient of several awards, among others, she received the Golden Key National Honour Society Award from the University of Toronto (Specialist Programme in Psychology, 1997) and the Lubiam Prize (Milan, 1983).
Her work has been exhibited in public and commercial galleries in Canada, the USA, and Europe. It is included in the public collections of Mr. J.J. Abrams, Ms. Whoopi Goldberg, Ms. Julia Roberts, the Archives of Ontario/Government of Ontario, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, the Omer DeSerres Corporation, as well as many private international collections. Toni Hamel lives and works in Kingston, Ontario.

"I describe my work as an illustrated commentary on human frailties or, more precisely, as a compendium of unintended consequences. Rooted in storytelling, my art practice draws from personal experiences and outward observations to create thematic bodies of work that reflect on and interpret the psychological unease of our anthropocentric age. Pointing to historical references, popular culture and personal environmental concerns, my satirical narratives ultimately question our behaviour while alerting us about the repercussions of our actions."
