About the Item

Allegorical Mythological Scene Unidentified Artist 17th–18th Century Oil on canvas Framed: 152 x 196 cm Canvas: 131 x 178 cm No signatured Description This masterfully executed Baroque or Rococo-period painting presents an evocative mythological and allegorical composition, likely inspired by the figure of Bacchus (Dionysus), the god of wine, revelry, and fertility. The semi-nude central figure, crowned with ivy and grape leaves, raises a glass of wine in a celebratory gesture, embodying the indulgence and excess often associated with Bacchic themes. The rich still-life arrangement of fruits and grape vines, along with a leopard—a symbolic companion of Bacchus—, reinforces this identification. To the right, an elderly cloaked man warms his hands over a brazier, accompanied by a cherubic child—a scene that contrasts the youthful abundance of Bacchus with the harshness of winter, possibly symbolizing the changing of seasons or the cycle of life and decay. The background features a snowy village scene, adding a vanitas-like element, a common theme in 17th–18th-century allegorical works. Executed in the European academic tradition, the painting exhibits bold chiaroscuro, fluid brushwork, and rich coloration, reminiscent of Flemish and Italian Baroque painters such as Peter Paul Rubens, Sebastiano Ricci, or Jan Boeckhorst. The dynamic composition, combined with sumptuous drapery and lifelike figures, conveys a theatrical grandeur characteristic of the period. A museum-quality piece, this painting is an outstanding addition for collectors of Old Masters, interior designers, and enthusiasts of historical allegorical art. The original ornate frame complements the artwork's historic charm and decorative appeal.

Oil painting on canvas. French school of the seventeenth century. The scene, set at night in the garden of a villa, of which you can glimpse the ornate facade on the right and in which the fountain gushing with cherubs stands out, under a dark sky and further obscured by heavy clouds, proposes two figures who entertain each other in conversation : an elderly modestly dressed is sternly admonishing a seated young man, richly dressed, who seems instead to make the gesture of mea culpa with his hand. The physiognomy and the gestures of the two characters, together with the style of the clothes, would refer to the philosopher Aristotle who was called to the court of Macedon to be the tutor...
