Olio su tela. Scuola nord-italiana del XVII-XVIII secolo.
La grande scena è ricca di figure in abiti dell' antico oriente, collocati in un paesaggio nordico, ricco di vegetazione e con cime montuose in lontananza.
La metà sinistra è occupata principalmente da San Giovanni Battista, ritto in piedi e raffigurato secondo l'iconografia tradizionale: è vestito di una povera tunica fatta di pelli d' animali, ma ha drappeggiato intorno un manto rosso, simbolo del martirio; regge con una mano il bastone a forma di croce, intorno al quale si arrotola il cartiglio con la scritta "Ecce Agnus Dei", simbolo del suo ruolo di precursore e annunciatore del Cristo, e ai suoi piedi l' agnello stesso, vittima sacrificale e quindi simbolo del sacrificio di Cristo.
Con l'altra mano Giovanni indica alla sua destra qualcuno fuori dall'inquadratura della scena, ma che è ovviamente il Cristo: tale gesto catalizza gli sguardi di tutta la folla collocata sulla destra della scena, folla variegata che rappresenta generi, classi sociali e razze differenti, a indicare l'universalità del messaggio del Battista.
L'opera già in precedenza restaurata e ritelata, presenta una patina diffusa da ripulire.
E' presentata in cornice antica.
