La scena raffigura l'episodio biblico tratto dal Primo libro di Samuele che così racconta :"Ora quando il cattivo spirito permesso da Dio investiva Saul, Davide prendeva l'arpa e si metteva a suonare; Saul si sentiva sollevato, stava meglio, e il cattivo spirito se ne andava da lui."
Nel dipinto le figure risultano possenti e vigorose, sia il re Saul come le guardie che lo trattengono, raffigurate in un intreccio di figure che occupa tutta la parte sinistra della scena; sulla destra invece sta Davide, che seppur giovane e semplice pastore, sie ne sta calmo davanti al re furioso, suonando il suo strumento con dignità e fermezza.
Sullo sfondo a destra , in un corridoio del palazzo, assistono alla cena sgomenti i sacerdoti e i consiglieri del re.
Sulla cornice del dipinto è posta una targhetta attributiva a Bernardo Strozzi.
Il dipinto restaurato e ritelato a metà '900, è posta in cornice dorata in stile.
